The biggest mistake most yoga teachers make when cueing breath is to use the same old generic “inhale on an upward movement, exhale down”…gosh this is tricky and can be so wrong in so many ways and once you see it you can’t unsee it!

Intentionality is everything! And when you learn to understand the nervous system, breath physiology and why the body has to be in a state of receptivity before change can happen… EVERYTHING changes!

What’s interesting is that studies show that yoga teachers finish their YTT and don’t feel “qualified” to teach. They struggle not knowing how to properly observe students, how to adapt their cueing to what is actually happening in the room etc.

Most teachers were never taught the science of transformation inside of a yoga teacher training and in the end, most teachers get burnt out from their own struggle of not understanding why their classes aren’t filling… And they quit somewhere around the 18month mark of being certified 😔.

The world needs yoga teachers now more than ever! So if you’re a certified yoga teacher 🙏🏻 THANK YOU!! Thank you for being on this journey of wanting to help others!

Just please do t give up!

Almost all yoga teachers struggle with charging AND struggle to move beyond the studio because they don’t know how to charge private clients or workshops/ experiences..

This can be for several reasons, confidence, length of time teaching etc.
But the conditioning that has occurred around what you should or shouldn’t charge is also a major player and it drives me crazy!

In the 200hr yoga teacher training I attended, there were 2 paragraphs inside the “business of yoga “ module…One that said, “Go teach for free” and the other that said “don’t quit your job” … Well duh, if you’re being told by “leaders” in the industry to do this as charity work then… right.. don’t quit your job ! 🫠🫠🫠🫠😖

First of all… I have such a big fu***ng problem with this message!!!!

Secondly… is that actual business advice???

There is a major reorganization of thought patterns and beliefs that needs to happen around money, charging, & receiving wealth as a yoga teacher!

It really takes something to stand in your power & own the transformations you are causing…

Welcome to The Epiphanies I have While In Practice… A series I had no idea I wanted to create 😆

Besides what I actually wanted to talk about (you just gotta watch the video) I realized 2 things while creating this…

1) Practice & All is coming!!! Feeling stuck? Get on your mat.
2) Home practices rock 🤘!!! I mean really, you have a breakthrough moment and all you want to do is journal or create a video 🤣 … and so you do!! Not something you can do in a studio class!!! Don’t get me wrong , studios (especially really hot ones) are amazing!! But I wish more people knew about the power in a home practice!!!
Don’t knock it till you try it!!!

Ok, follow for more on this series… as of right now I have no idea how many parts it will have but hey, there’s a kind of freedom I like to that!

In my first 200hr YTT, Breathwork was taught in just a short module & in just a couple of hours. My teacher taught us 5 pranayama techniques, listed the contraindications, spoke very quickly about the lungs and moved on…
And even though it was quick I was left in an experience of “holy f**k, this is amazing! This may be the best feeling I’ve ever had! Wtf is this stuff!” I mean … I was in complete awe. And left wondering why it was treated like an optional add on when I felt like IT IS LITERALLY THE WHOLE POINT!!!

We completed the training, I didn’t pay much attention to it and began teaching yoga… sequences…

Fast forward… I opened my studio and that’s where I began working closely with my students … always asking them questions.. most of my students reported feelings of anxiety, confusion discomfort or a lack of opening in their postures depending the teachers que. This led me down a rabbit hole…

It’s in the breath!!! *ALMOST* all yoga teachers are teaching breathing loosely. They may or may not include it in a class or when they do teach it… they are simply reminding their students to breathe with no further instruction . Of course I understand why though! This is how teachers are taught in YTT’s and I had the same experience in my own first training.

If you’re not intentionally cueing breath in an anatomically congruent way, you may be reinforcing your students negative emotions, beliefs, habits, unstable movement (which can lead to injuries) etc…
Subconsciously they stay stuck in a fear based practice…
On & Off the mat!

But there’s a better way!

I’ve been playing with an idea for something that lives after your 200hr. YTT
AND.. it’s NOT another certification!!!

I’m seeing far too many of the good guys, the most amazingly gifted yoga teachers who are also reiki certified, breathworkers etc. they are multi talented and healing at the deepest levels but they aren’t getting paid for it!

They’re either undercharging because they don’t have the right offerings built out, or they’re working way too many hours at multiple studios, burnt out and under paid.

If you’re newly certified, you might be feeling overwhelmed, you don’t know how to kick off this new career, and from my own experience having been a newbie once… You’re probably feeling not ready enough, you’re experiencing imposter syndrome, you’re overthinking everything to the point where not only are you delaying doing what you love but if you don’t start, you’ll actually end up giving up on your dream eventually because it just doesn’t seem realistic 🙄.
(P.S. none of these stories are actually true!)
