Tough moments don’t have to define an athlete. How they learn to handle them can.

With the right support, setbacks can become opportunities to build resilience, confidence, and stronger problem-solving skills on and off the field.

The legacy of youth sports! Good to see my brother, Rodney Levy and his wife this week. We played club soccer together, against each other in high school and college, and together again in some men's league tournaments. The wins and the losses come and go, but the relationships endure! We live 3000 miles apart and don't get to see each other too often, but when we do it's like no time passed.

As I coach high school soccer this season, I hope I am doing everything possible so that they can improve at soccer and win some games. But more importantly so that the boys I am coaching have a foundation to maintain friendships like this.

A quiet ride home doesn’t mean something is wrong. Your athlete may simply need time to process the game in their own way.

Give them space, stay available, and let the conversation happen when they’re ready. Silence can be support too.

When your athlete says “I want to quit,” the first response doesn’t have to be an answer.

Get curious about what’s behind those words. Listening first can help uncover frustration, pressure, exhaustion, or something they’ve been struggling to explain. Give them space to talk before deciding what comes next.

Sports Parents: youth sports goes by fast! I had the pleasure to coach both my boys. The older one has now graduated college and has gone into coaching. The younger one is a sophomore in high school and now as tall as me (maybe taller once you read this!). It's been the most enjoyable ride: the success, the failure, the growth, the disappointment, the friends made a long the way. I wouldn't trade it for anything!

Sometimes the best thing you can do is not fix it right away.

Tough sports moments give athletes a chance to think, problem-solve, and discover what they can handle. Be there to listen and guide them while giving them room to find their own way forward.

Sports can become a huge part of a young athlete’s world, but their identity should never depend on how they perform.

Remind them that wins, losses, starting positions, and statistics don’t change their value. Sometimes the most powerful thing a sports parent can say is, “I love watching you be you.”

Is your athlete playing because they love the game—or because they’re chasing approval?

When athletes feel valued beyond wins, mistakes, and performance, they’re more likely to build real confidence, resilience, and lasting motivation. Support the person first, and the performance can follow.

The moments after a mistake often shape an athlete more than the mistake itself.

When parents respond with patience instead of frustration, athletes learn resilience instead of fear. Your reaction today becomes the mindset they carry into tomorrow's practices, games, and challenges.

Sometimes confidence is chipped away by comments that seem harmless.

Comparisons, constant correction, and making every conversation about performance can create pressure instead of progress. When parents celebrate effort, listen first, and make space for enjoyment, athletes feel more secure, resilient, and confident.
