Read below for symptoms, prevention & treatment.

SWIMMER’S EAR
also known as otitis externa, is an infection of the outer ear canal, created when water gets trapped in the ear after swimming.

SYMPTOMS:
* Ear pain, which may be severe and worsen with pulling on the ear or chewing.
* Itching in the ear canal.
* Redness & swelling of the outer ear and ear canal.
* Feeling of fullness or blockage in the ear.

TREATMENT:
Your Doctor may prescribe antibiotic/steroid drops.

PREVENTION:
1. OTC Ear Drying Drops
-Refrain if you have ear tubes, punctured ear drums, swimmer's ear, or ear drainage.
2. Dry ears thoroughly.
3. Tilt head back & forth so that each ear faces down. This allows water to drain out of the ear canal.
4. Bathing Caps &/or Ear Plugs

Wetsuit Thickness Guide by Water Temperature

Tropical (22°C+/72°F+): 1-2mm or 3mm shorty/fullsuit.

Warm/Temperate (18°C-20°C/65°F-70°F): 3/2mm fullsuit.

Cool (12°C-17°C/55°F-64°F): 3/2mm or 4/3mm fullsuit.

Cold (8°C-11°C/48°F-54°F): 4/3mm or 5/4mm fullsuit.

Freezing (< 6°C/Below 42°F): 6/5mm or 7mm hooded suit

Safety and Comfort
According to the American Red Cross the recommended water temperature ranges from 78°F to 85°F for the most comfortable and safe swimming experience, but it can vary depending on who is using the pool, and for what purpose.

Water Temperatures & Corresponding Affects

* 85F (29.4C) Water feels pleasantly cool.

* 77-82F (25-28C) Pool temperature range for Olympic swimming competition. Below 77F breathing begins to be adversely affected.

* 70F (21C) Water feels quite cold to most people. We recommend wearing thermal protection below this level.

* 50-60F (10-15.5C)Maximum Intensity cold shock range. Complete loss of breathing control. Swimming failure.

ages 6- 15 Water temp should be ≥ 84.2º F
Intense activity – water temp should be 78.8° to 82°F

Child drowning statistics

For children younger than 5,
87% of drowning deaths occur in home pools or hot tubs.

As of late October 2025, there have been at least 97 child drownings in Florida and 73 total drownings. The most common causes are backyard pools and, more specifically for children, being able to get out of the home undetected, which is a major concern in the state.
