The 50-50 sweep is good for knocking down a strong base.

But don’t get stuck there!!

The Reverse de La Riva hook is one of my favorite controls.

These details are great for keeping the position, but I start with something else.

What do you like to start with?

This classic choke takes one arm out of the fight while adding leverage.

The frames give us the opening we need.

How do you deal with strong legs?

I like to myself heavier!

This is about as simple as it gets, but there are some important details that make it tick.

If we can’t lift them, this guard can go one of two ways.

All of the fancy variations come down to making good use of this idea.

Which direction do you prefer to go?

Do you usually play your game, or someone else’s?

Higher level players tend to perform a kind of “involuntary drilling” on their training partners. That’s one reason experienced people are usually safer for beginners to roll with. The path is familiar, the reactions are practiced, and the outcomes are more predictable.

Once a certain level of trust is built, some people will purposely allow you to play your game for a while.

Sometimes it’s useful to let someone establish closed guard and learn how to stop the machine at specific checkpoints. Other times, we let it go too far, accept the loss, and start again.

If you’re inside your first 5 years of Jiu Jitsu, there’s a good chance you already spend a lot of time inside other people’s games.

The long-term goal is not to force your way through every exchange.
It’s to become so familiar with the process that you can recognize where you are, what is happening, and what should probably come next.
