Another piece of Angel’s Karate history. 🥋
Midland and Hemlock Mi .

These pictures go back to the 1990s and into the early 2000s.

Mrs. Terri was one of our instructors during those years, working with our students and helping us build the school and the martial arts family we have today.

When I look at these old pictures, I don’t just see uniforms and belts. I see the people who gave their time, trained together, taught together and became part of our history.

Thank you, Mrs. Terri, for being part of the journey.

Some people come to a martial arts school to learn.

Others stay long enough to help build it.

Two pictures. Ten years apart. One journey. 🥋

Angel’s Taekwondo — Hemlock, Michigan, 1980.

Ten years later — Angel’s Karate opening a new school in Midland, Michigan, 1990.

Looking back at these pictures reminds me that nothing was built overnight. It took years of teaching, training, believing in what we were doing, and continuing to move forward.

Different buildings. Different generations of students. Same commitment.

And more than 45 years later, we are still here — still teaching and still passing it on.

This is part of the history of Angel’s Karate. 🥋

A Lifetime in the Martial Arts 🥋

These pictures are very special to me. They show my son teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to children and adults right here at my school, Angel’s Karate.

He started attending martial arts school when he was only 5 years old. Today he is 48, and he has never stopped training, learning or teaching.

He is a 5th Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo, with experience in both ITF and WTF, and a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Modern Arnis and Kickboxing.

He is also a graduate of Northwood University with a degree in Business and studies in Advertising, and today owns and operates his own martial arts school in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

But as his father, what makes me most proud goes beyond the belts and accomplishments. He is the father of four children and an amazing husband.

I have watched his journey since he was 5 years old — 43 years of martial arts.

A student became a teacher.
A teacher became a school owner.
A young boy became a husband and father.

And through it all, he never stopped training and never stopped teaching.

These pictures were taken at my studio, where he is still giving back and passing his knowledge to another generation.

That, to me, is what a lifetime in the martial arts is all about. 🥋
Thank you

A Moment That Helped Shape My Martial Arts Journey 🥋

Grandmaster B.C. Yu and Professor Remy Presas, founder of Modern Arnis, had known and respected each other since the 1970s.

Around 1993, this picture captured the two Grandmasters together — and the young man standing beside them was me, Angel DeJesus.

I was a 4th Degree Black Belt and a longtime student of Grandmaster B.C. Yu, involved in the development of his Eurythmic Method. This was an important time as the principles of Taekwondo and Modern Arnis began to come together in our training.

Years later, that history became part of the continuing development of what I teach today: Taekwondo Boxing.

I was young, I was learning, and most importantly — I was there. 🥋

The teaching continues.

Today was a very special and historic day for me.

My teacher, Grandmaster James B.C. Yu, and two of his longtime students came together again after nearly 50 years.

Grandmaster Martin Marcus brought his Kukkiwon 9th Dan certificate to be signed by the man who helped guide our martial arts journey from the beginning.

50 years of friendship, loyalty, tradition, and martial arts.

Some moments you never forget. 🥋

🥋 FROM AGE 4 TO THE NFL.

Andrew Wylie began his martial arts journey at Angel’s Karate at just 4 years old and continued all the way to Black Belt.

Years later, his journey took him to the NFL.

We are proud to have been one of the early chapters in Andrew’s story.

Start them young.
Teach consistency.
Give them room to grow.

You never know where their journey will take them.

🥋 DON’T JUST LOOK AT THE RANK. LOOK AT THE JOURNEY.

These certificates represent more than 50 years of training, teaching, learning and growth in the martial arts.

Every certificate has a story.
Every rank had a teacher.
Every teacher contributed knowledge.
And every generation carries a responsibility to pass that knowledge forward.

I don’t share these to say I am better than anyone.

I share them because parents and students deserve to know the experience, history and credentials of the person they choose to learn from.

A certificate shows a rank.

A lifetime shows the journey behind it.

And after all these years, I am still learning.

🥋 CONSISTENCY BUILDS SUCCESS

From Little Ninja to young man.

Same student. Same school. Years of training, learning and growing.

A belt shows rank.
These pictures show something more — commitment, discipline and consistency.

At Angel’s Karate, we don’t just watch students earn belts.

We have the privilege of watching them grow up.

That is success. 🥋

Don’t Just Count the Years. Ask What Happened During Them.

Most martial artists are proud of their school and their teacher — and they should be.

But 50 years in martial arts can mean very different things.

Who taught your teacher?
How much time did they actually spend together?
Was there consistency, loyalty, and continued learning?
Did they preserve what they were taught while helping the art grow?

True lineage isn’t about claiming to be better than someone else.

It is about knowing where your knowledge came from, respecting those who gave it to you, and being responsible for what you pass to the next generation.

Experience is more than time.

It is what you did with that time.

🥋 What does real martial arts experience mean to you?

🥋 THIS WASN’T LEARNED OVER A WEEKEND.

Jumping kicks. Breaking. Timing. Power. Control.

These photographs capture my early years of martial arts training and teaching in Midland.

But there is something these pictures cannot show:

The thousands of hours behind them.

The teachers.
The repetition.
The mistakes.
The discipline.
The years required to turn knowledge into experience.

More than five decades later, I’m still teaching—and passing those lessons to another generation at Angel’s Karate.

When choosing a martial arts school for your child, don’t just ask:

“How much does it cost?”

Ask:

“What will my child receive for that investment?”

At Angel’s Karate, we’re not interested in rushing children through belts.

We want them to develop focus, confidence, critical thinking, self-control, perseverance—and real martial arts ability.
