“If all the fibers are recruited, load doesn’t matter.”
Sounds logical.
It’s also an incomplete way to think about hypertrophy.
Because recruitment isn’t the same thing as maximum force production.
You can recruit a large number of motor units with a lighter load.
But that doesn’t mean you’re automatically producing the same mechanical demands as you would with a heavier load.
And this is where a lot of hypertrophy conversations go off the rails.
People reduce everything to:
“Just train close to failure.”
But failure tells you something about effort.
It doesn’t tell you everything about force, loading, or the mechanical tension experienced by the muscle.
A slow rep can feel brutal.
A light set can create a massive pump.
You can recruit a lot of motor units.
None of those facts, by themselves, mean the mechanical stimulus is identical.
Effort matters.
Recruitment matters.
Load matters.
Exercise mechanics matter.
Stop looking for ONE variable that explains muscle growth.
The body isn’t that simple.
The better question isn’t:
“Does load matter?”
It’s:
“How do load, force production, recruitment, and exercise mechanics interact to determine the stimulus?”
That’s a much better question.
Save this. Then stop arguing from slogans and start thinking in mechanisms.
