ROTATE TO DOMINATE. ⚡️

At OAK Performance, power doesn't only go up and forward. It goes around.

This is a half-kneeling rotational med ball throw.
One knee down.
Ball loaded at the back hip.
Turn.
Release.

Taking a knee takes the legs out of it. No big step. No lean. No cheating. The power has to come from the hips and trunk turning together, fast.

That's rotational power. The same quality behind a swing, a throw, a spike, a shot.

What we coach:
Load the back hip.
Stay tall through the torso.
Hips lead. Shoulders follow.
Throw through the ball, not at it.

The med ball is the perfect tool. Light enough to move fast. Heavy enough to demand intent. You let it go at the end, so there's no braking to hold back for, and every rep can be 100%.

Every throw is a max effort.
Every rep has a purpose.

Load.
Turn.
Throw.
Reset.

STICK THE LANDING. 🌳

At OAK Performance, we teach athletes how to land before we ask them to fly.

This is a weighted drop landing.
Dumbbells in hand.
Step off the box.
Hit the ground.
Freeze.

No bounce. No rebound. No wobble.

Every jump ends with a landing. Every cut starts with a stop. If an athlete can't absorb force, they can't redirect it, and that's where knees and ankles get into trouble.

So we train the brakes.

The drop lets gravity load the athlete fast. Their job is to catch it: hips back, knees tracking over toes, chest up, feet flat, quiet contact. That's eccentric strength and braking control, the same qualities we chase when we look at braking RFD on the force plates.

The dumbbells add load without adding height. More force to control, same box.

Step off.
Absorb.
Own the position.

Then the athlete earns the right to add the rebound: depth jumps and reactive work.

Brakes first.
Speed second.
Durability always.

WE TRAIN DIFFERENT. 🌳

The best way to improve an elite performer may be to work on what they’re missing, not simply push what they already do well.

The tricky part?
The most effective change can feel completely counterintuitive.

If you’re curious about what actually helps high performers get better, give the full episode a listen.

WHAT IS SPEED, REALLY? ⚡️
At OAK Performance, we hear it all the time.
"My kid is just fast."
"My kid is just slow."
But speed isn't one thing.
It's a skill set.
Getting started.
Reaching top gear.
Slowing down under control.
Cutting and redirecting.
Every one of those can be measured.
Every one of those can be trained.
Over the next few weeks we're breaking down each piece of speed. Simple explanations, real examples, and what it means for your athlete on the field or court.
Start with a strong first step and a body that projects forward, not up.
That's where speed begins.
Which part of speed does your athlete need most?

NO MOTOR. NO EXCUSES. ⚡️
At OAK Performance, speed isn't something you wait for. It's something you build, one rep at a time.
This is the curved, non-motorized treadmill.
No belt pulling you along.
No speed button.
You are the motor.
The belt only moves as fast as you push it. Run tall, drive the knee, strike under the hips, and the curve rewards you. Lean back or reach out in front, and it slows you down. Instant feedback, every single step.
That's why we use it for acceleration and max-velocity work. Athletes have to produce horizontal force into the ground on their own. Arm action has to stay big and aggressive. Posture has to hold up when they're tired.
Look at the shots.
Front view: knee up, toe up, eyes forward.
Side view: big arm swing, full push-off behind the hips.
And a teammate waiting his turn, watching every rep.
Short sprints.
Full rest.
Full intent.
That's how you train fast.
⚡️ SPEED IS KING.
Quick one: have you ever tried a curved treadmill? Love it or hate it?

RACE THE GIRL NEXT TO YOU. ⚡️

At OAK Performance, speed is a skill. And skills get trained.

This is sprint work on the turf.
Side by side.
Lane by lane.
Nobody wants to finish second.

Competition pulls out a level of intent you can't fake in a warm-up line. When someone is on your shoulder, you push the ground harder.

That's the point.

We coach the start:
Forward lean.
Violent arm drive.
Knee up. Toe up.
Punch the ground behind you.

Acceleration is all about horizontal force. The athlete who puts more force into the ground, in less time, wins the first few steps. On a volleyball court, those first steps are everything: chasing down a shanked pass, closing a block, transitioning off the net.

Short sprints.
Full intent.
Quality over quantity.

Because speed trained tired turns into conditioning. We want fast reps, not just hard ones.

Every rep is a race.
Every race is a lesson.

⚡️ SPEED IS KING.

When knee or ankle pain makes an athlete avoid bending, the squat can turn into a hinge. Brian Buck explains how an upright goblet or front squat brings that flexion back into the movement and why it matters to build tolerance. YOU HAVE THE SKILL. WHAT'S UNDER THE HOOD? ⚡️
At OAK Performance, we see it every week.
Athletes with great hands.
Great feel.
Great IQ.
But getting beat to the ball, beat off the dribble, beat down the line.
Skill is the paint job.
Speed and power are the engine.
Beat the throw.
Blow by your defender.
Win the race to the loose ball.
Separate in one step.
Same skills.
Bigger engine.
Better athlete.
And the best part? Speed is trainable. We measure it, we build it, we prove it with real numbers.
Spring season is closer than you think. Is your athlete's engine ready?

BUILD THE HINGE. BUILD THE JUMP. 🌳

At OAK Performance, the trap bar deadlift is where vertical power starts.

Every big jump on a volleyball court comes back to one thing: hip extension.
Load the hips. Drive the floor away. Leave the ground.

So we load it. And we coach it right.

Hips back.
Chest proud.
Lats locked.
Bar close.

The trap bar puts the load at the athlete's sides, so she can find a strong hinge, brace through the trunk, and push hard through the floor without the bar fighting her position.

That's force production.
Built one rep at a time.

The setup matters.
The lockout matters.
Every inch in between matters more.

Then we check it.
Same session. Straight to the force plates.
Jump. Land. Coach watching every rep.

Because strength that never shows up in the jump isn't the goal.
We want athletes producing more force, faster.
That's how a strong hinge turns into a higher touch.

Strong in the weight room.
Explosive on the court.

WE TRAIN DIFFERENT. 🌳

OFF THE FLOOR. ONTO THE BOX. ⚡️

At OAK Performance, a box jump isn't about how tall the box is.
It's about how you get there.

Look at these reps.
Arms driving up.
Knees pulling high.
Feet tucked under the hips.
Eyes locked on the target.

Landing on the box near the top of the jump means far less impact than coming all the way back down to the floor. That lets athletes chase max intent on every takeoff without piling stress on their knees.

What we coach on every rep:
A fast, powerful extension through the hips, knees, and ankles.
An aggressive arm swing to add height.
A quick tuck to clear the edge.
A soft, quiet landing in an athletic position.

For a volleyball player, that's the approach jump.
The block.
The second effort when the ball comes right back over the net.

Big jumps come from producing force fast.
Not from stacking boxes until somebody misses.

Right height. High intent. Full extension.
Stick it. Step down. Reset. Go again.

Every rep on purpose.
