If your brain won’t shut off, you can’t think your way out of a thought loop. But you can write your way through it.
It’s called expressive writing. You stop being tangled inside the thought and start seeing it from the outside.
A note: if you’re living with significant trauma, this can feel activating rather than calming. Turning attention inward isn’t always safe when your body hasn’t felt safe. That’s not you doing it wrong, it’s a sign this work goes best gradually, ideally alongside a trauma-informed therapist who can help you titrate the pace.
