🚨 IT’S COMPETITION WEEK!!! 🚨

This Saturday, November 7th, our Square One Jiu Jitsu Academy competition team heads to the IBJJF Open Tournament at the Hy-vee Arena in Kansas City!

Competition is an opportunity to test yourself, discover what you’ve improved, and identify what comes next in your journey. Every match is another chance to grow.

As exciting as wins and medals are, that’s never been our primary focus.

At SOJA, we care about our students first. Your performance on the mats is NOT a reflection of your worth as a person, and your identity should never be tied to the outcome of a match. We value your courage to step onto the mat, your willingness to learn, and the character you build through the process.

Compete with confidence! Learn from every moment. Win or lose, we’re proud of every one of you for having the heart to test yourselves.

Let’s have a great week of final preparations, and we’ll see everyone Saturday at the Hy-Vee Arena!

CONGRATULATIONS NORA!
🟦🟦⬛️⬛️🟦

Last night, Nora earned her blue belt at Square One Jiu Jitsu/ Zenith of Kansas City, marking a historic milestone as the first adult female promotion in the academy’s history!

Nora began her journey in the kids’ program and worked her way on to the adult team. For a long time, she was the only young lady training in our adult classes. That transition wasn’t easy. The physical challenges she faced were significant, and the odds weren’t always in her favor. But Nora kept showing up, putting in the work, and earning the respect of her teammates every step of the way!

Jiu Jitsu is hard…
Progress can be slow, especially when you’re consistently live sparring against bigger, stronger training partners. It takes a special kind of heart and dedication to keep pushing forward when the challenges seem overwhelming.

Nora never gave up!

Her journey is a powerful reminder of why more women and young girls should train Jiu Jitsu! With the realities of domestic violence and sexual assault in our society, learning to defend themselves is an important investment in their safety and confidence.

Jiu Jitsu can be especially challenging for those with smaller stature and bone structure. When physical disadvantages are a factor in nearly every round, progress can be difficult to see, and the road can feel discouraging. For women and girls who have experienced physical trauma or abuse, learning to trust training partners and feel comfortable in a physical environment can present another layer of difficulty.

Yet again, Nora persevered! For a long time, she represented women on our adult mats largely on her own, taking on those challenges with courage, heart, and determination.

Her promotion is more than another belt earned. It is a milestone for SOJA and a reminder of why women and young girls deserve to feel welcomed, supported, and respected in the Jiu Jitsu community!

Nora earned this every step of the way!!!

Congratulations on your blue belt, Nora… The entire Square One family is proud of you! 💙

🥋 EVER THOUGHT ABOUT TRYING JIU JITSU?

Maybe you’ve been looking for something that’s just for you. Maybe you’ve been wanting to get your kids involved in something different.

Jiu Jitsu is about more than learning how to grapple.

You train alongside teammates who challenge you, encourage you, and help you grow. For many people, that team environment becomes an important part of their week.

That’s what we’re building here at Square One Jiu Jitsu Academy in Downtown Lee’s Summit.

Men, women, and kids ages 5+ are welcome. No experience necessary.
