🔬 GEOLOGY UPDATE – Keokuk Area 🔬

Collectors around Keokuk are reporting a rare shift in geode mineral composition this spring.

Instead of the usual quartz and calcite, several recently opened geodes have revealed layered mineral zoning in reverse order—with calcite forming after quartz growth.

Even more unusual: a few specimens show mixed crystal habits that typically don’t occur together in the same cavity.

Local experts believe recent flooding along the Mississippi River may have exposed a previously untouched layer of the Warsaw Formation.

If confirmed, this could represent one of the most unusual mineral variations ever documented in Keokuk geodes 👀

If you’ve cracked any geodes recently… now might be a good time to take a closer look 💎
