What are you waiting to know before you are willing to choose?

For nonprofit leaders, a difficult decision can mean balancing the mission, your people, funding, and board expectations.

Sometimes, both options have a cost. Someone may be disappointed. Something you care about may need to change.

Before comparing your options again, pause and ask:

What matters most here?
What are we protecting?
What tradeoff are we willing to make?

Those questions can give you a clearer basis for choosing, even while uncertainty remains.

A good decision can still feel uncomfortable.

Leaders sometimes read discomfort as a warning sign:

"If this were really the right decision, shouldn't I feel better about it?"

Not necessarily.

A choice can disappoint someone, close a chapter, or create uncertainty and still be aligned with what matters most.

The goal is not to feel nothing. It is to understand why you are making the choice you are making.

What decision have you been using discomfort to second-guess?

During Covid, I nearly walked away from my dining room table. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

Stacks of papers. A to-do list on a loop. Projects that hadnโ€™t moved. My breath got short, my chest got heavy, and every instinct said: get up. Do anything else.

Instead, I stayed. I took a breath and said out loud:

โ€œHalle, you are in charge of this. You can figure it out.โ€

That one sentence changed the next hour.

We created the situation weโ€™re living in. Which means we can uncreate it, or build something different.

The pile is not in charge. You are. ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ“Œ I spent yesterday with the leaders TBA Credit Union to โ€œOrganize the Chaos in Your Brainโ€. If this sounds like something your team or organization could use, letโ€™s talk! In the mean time, what the best โ€œtime managementโ€ tip youโ€™ve found to lessen the stress around your to-do list?
