Monumental

You maybe surprised to hear, it’s been over 4 years since I really RACED a marathon. I’ve run a few, but to commit to training and run the risk that is the marathon, the fall edition of the Boston Marathon was the last time I was all in.

This whole season was very conservative. I kept the mileage low, for fear of injury. I held back on paces, for fear of failure. I ran two half marathons, and pulled up early in both, knowing it wasn’t my day (for several reasons).

I ran the at a pace of 7:14/mi in the heat
I ran the at a pace of 7:18/mi in the wind, humidity and with two big elevation climbs.

The plan was, train for and see how those races went. If they didn’t go well, I would just wait until spring. I was going to use ‘s bib for Indy after she got injured but halfway through the Windsor Half, I decided, no way, and texted her after to say I’ll pass.

Two weeks later asked if anyone wanted to go do Indy. I thought, if I aim for a 3:20, I could accomplish that. Again, being conservative out of fear.

Detroit did nothing to boost my confidence. I did have some workouts that gave me hope. By the time I got to Indy, I believed 3:10 could be possible if everything went my way. The goal, to pace properly and negative split for the FIRST TIME.

We got perfect weather. The plan was to actually hold back early, and ease into the race. I held back for 5mi. After that, it wasn’t that I sped up, I just stopped holding back. I got halfway in 1:34:15.

At mile 15, I thought my race was over. My left hip was screaming at me. After about half an hour mile, I realized, the slope of the road was aggravating it. I ran in the middle and it slowly dissipated. I have never felt so good at mile 20 of a race. It didn’t even feel hard until about 23.5mi. As the pain settled in, I just smiled at it as if to say, you got nothing on me. I’m finishing this strong.

3:08 flat
28 sec negative split
7:11 pace, better than either of the HALFS I ran in training

Huge shout out to .0 and BHB crew for getting me here. Wouldn’t have done it without you.

My running has been anything but consistent for, well, a couple years now. I came into this year thinking I’d run a marathon in May. That lasted about 2 weeks and I quit again. February I logged 5.8mi total.

At the end of May, I decided I would get moving again on June 1. That morning comes, I sleep in 😂 Later that day, my buddy texts me and asks if I want to start meeting in the mornings to run together. Ok, maybe some accountability will help.

It did.

I also joined a run group that does track Wednesday nights. It was very humbling at first. My paces were no where near what I was used to. I’m talking running 400s slower than what I could run a 5k at. But I stuck with it.

I logged more miles in June than Jan-May combined. I told myself if I was consistent through June, I’d sign up for half. I was, so I did. Then in August I grabbed a bib for international half.

The Windsor half was ok, not my best, not the worst. I was encouraged with how far I had come but decided to cancel plans for a fall marathon. Yesterday I ran pretty much the same time, on a harder course in much worse conditions. I’ll take that as a win.

A race is the final paragraph of a story. My race yesterday was more about the past 4.5 months than it was the 95 minutes I was out there yesterday, and I’m proud of the last 4.5 months.

There’s always way more to the story, but this post is already too long and nobody is reading this far anyway 😂 Congrats to everyone who put in the work the last several months and showed up yesterday. The weather may not have been on your side, but nothing was wasted these last few months either 💪👊

I look sweaty but it was actually pretty cool out this morning. I haven’t run enough this summer and soon the days of seeing the sun on morning runs will be gone. Looking to take advantage while I can.

No races on my calendar for the first time in YEARS! Who knows, I may pop into one this fall yet. Any recommendations?

Appreciation Post 🥳

Years ago, I made it my goal to qualify for the Boston marathon. I knew I needed that sub 3. I was working with a coach and although I got a qualifying time, I couldn’t get the time I needed to beat the cutoff.

I changed strategies and self coached for one cycle. I pushed myself hard, or so I thought, and got my first sub 3 at

After that race I reached out to to talk about coaching. We started working together in summer of 2018 and all I remember is, I had so much more in me because as hard as I pushed myself the previous cycle, he pushed me harder.

2019 was my glory year of running. All my PR’s are from that year. And although we had never met, I could not have done it without Tyler.

We had never met, but as fate would have it, we were in the same wave at the and finally got to meet irl.

I should mention he doesn’t do 1on1 coaching anymore, so don’t reach out to inquire, but I just wanted to say a huge public thank you to Tyler for all his support and helping me achieve things I never even dreamed were possible.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been running how I want to be. I’m coming into 2024 stronger than I’ve ever been and more than anything, aiming for some consistency. I’ve only run the year once, and that year I crushed it. I don’t need to run 2800mi, but keep in consistent. Keep getting up. Keep showing up.

Let’s see where it takes me

Happy new year 🎆🎊🥳

I’m trying to make the most of perfect running temps during the most colorful time of the year when we still have daylight on my runs

It’s a very small window. This might be the only one, so I’m documenting it 😂

Congrats to all the NYC marathoners yesterday. I’ve seen so many great races from so many of you over the last month or two. Those don’t happen in a day or two. It took months, if not years to have that great day. Hope you’re getting the chance to enjoy it before the next build starts 💪🙌

MEDAL MONDAY 🏅

Getting that $3 medal and free banana at the end of the race was totally worth the months of training and hundreds of dollars worth of shoes, registration fees and hotel room 😂💁🏻‍♂️

All kidding aside, Toronto shows up for this race and there was great crowds, beautiful weather and, like any great race, nowhere near enough porta potties.

Got to share the course with so many great friends and even got to meet someone on the podcast I listen to on all my runs.

I know there’s more in me but I am pumped with how yesterday went. Thank you Toronto 🥳

Oh hi!

Nothing exciting going on, just, was forced into a different running route this morning and got a nice backdrop for a pic.

Still been in the gym lots. Have run a few 5k’s. Last one was Canada day, and was super hot. Basically pulled up a mile in because I couldn’t breathe. Humidity, forest fire smoke, lungs were No bueno.

Got a couple weeks of short distance training left before another marathon build. Still not where I once was but seeing so many of you around my age still crushing it and getting faster is pushing me to not give up.

Thanks for always inspiring 🙏💪

Something about that ☀️ made me want to get out there and run.

The last few months, part of running has been a bit of a challenge. To steal a golf term, I feel like I’ve had the yips. Running most days wasn’t that bad. Any day that I had a workout, mentally I just couldn’t get there.

The amount of mornings my alarm went off at 5am, I’d get up, get ready, warm up, get out the door, only to run 50ft and give up, they are too many to count.

And those were the days I actually made it out the door or even out of bed.

This past week it happened again. I had a mile time trial. I actually crushed a workout earlier in the week, but on time trial day… nope.

A friend of mine said, even if it’s going to be super slow by your standard, just get out there and do it and don’t quit. I got out there. I wanted to quit. But I didn’t. And I finished within 8 seconds of that super slow time that was thrown out there 😂

All that did not motivate me to want to run this weekend. But that beautiful sunny day, warm weather, well… let’s go have some fun.

That’s what it’s supposed to be anyway, right?

After 5 weeks off running, I did a couple workouts last week (that were some of my worst ever btw) and then hopped into a 5k.

I seriously thought that I’d be over the moon with anything under 22min. As I approached the finish around 21min, I was a bit surprised. My 4x3min workout on Thursday was a slower pace than what I held for this race and THAT felt hard.

Mostly just a test to see where I’m starting and track my progress, but it was fun to get out there and run a race for the first time ever in my hometown.

Congrats to my buddy Steve whose sole goal was to beat me (he did 😂). Also, my coworker who ran 5.5k for the first time 2 weeks ago in 42min and finished yesterday in 27min!! And finally another coworker who finished 3rd OA female! We got some runners at work 💪

Great to celebrate with friends and get back to running again

Let’s see where this goes 🥳

MEDAL MONDAY

It’s been a minute since I’ve done one of these after the DNF a few weeks ago. Nice to come home with a medal.

The goal yesterday was simply to finish and not hurt myself anymore. I held a good pace with .0 for the first 23k but the hills ate me up. I was struggling to recover from one and I told him to go on ahead.

I had to stop 3 different times to stretch out the hip and it helped a ton. No walking, just a few quick stops.

Great to enjoy the atmosphere and treat it like a victory lap. Maybe if I had run more than 4 times since Chilly Half, it could’ve gone better, but, what are you going to do.

Always great to see so many friends at races like this. Definitely the highlight to my day and worth more than the medal. Cheers to a great day 🍻
