Upgrade Part 2- Previously, I detailed longtime client SP’s Moots road bike upgrade from Shimano Ultegra mechanical 11-speed shifting to Sram Force AXS 12-speed wireless electronic shifting. What did we do with the old Ultegra parts? We converted SP’s mid-2000s Quintana Roo Typhoon triathlon bike to an aero road bike!

Unlike today’s modern triathlon bikes, tri bikes of the Typhoon era typically still had slacker seat tube angles similar to that of road bikes. We swapped the triathlon aero and base bar cockpit for a road handlebar and STI levers. I had S’s Moots road positional setup in my records, so I selected the appropriate stem length and rise, positioned the saddle, and S now has himself a cool vintage aero road bike with modern components.

Upgrade Part 1- Longtime client SP and I designed a custom Moots road bike a few years ago. He wanted to upgrade the components from Shimano Ultegra 11-speed mechanical shifting to Sram Force AXS wireless 12-speed.

The upgrade was fairly straightforward. New shifters, brake calipers, front and rear derailleurs, crankset (with powermeter) and bottom bracket. The freehub body on his Boyd wheels was switched out for a Sram XDR driver as well.

A terrific refresh for a venerable bike! And wait for the next post to see what we do with the Ultegra parts we took off! Enjoy the miles ahead S!!! Thank you!!! 😁

An Ironman’s New Road Bike - It was the right moment for longtime client MB to get a new road bike. She wanted an endurance road bike for longer-distance riding, but wanted it to have zip. We discussed models, and she decided on the Quintana Roo Tri Service Course Route, a nimble endurance road bike with an efficient aero frameset.

Quintana Roo’s customizable program allowed M to pick her color (Podium Green), drivetrain components (Shimano Ultegra Di2 electronic), and wheels (DT Swiss ERC1600 aero carbon).

A Fantastic Seminar with new triathletes getting ready for their first triathlon at Max Performance Triathlons Title 9 Womens Triathlon in Hopkinton! Tim Richmond from Max Perfomance went over what to expect before and during raceday, including logistics, rules, and what to know on the swim, bike, and run. Will Kirousis from Tri Hard Endurance Sports Coaching lent his experience working with athletes and spoke about nutrition before and during the race. Four Grace Bicycles Ambassadors gave presentations on their first triathlons, what went well, what they’d do differently, and each gave tips on a particular discipline. Janice G. talked about the Swim, Julie K. talked about the Bike, Jen F. talked about the Run, and Elle B. talked about Transition and Logistics. I gave a quick flat repair demonstration. Thanks to Mark M. for the GU nutrition giveaways!

It was wonderful to see the cameradie and support that triathletes give to each other. Thank you everyone for the terrific questions, guidance, and enthusiasm!!!

SG’s New Quintana Roo X-PR - Longtime client SG qualified for the Ironman 70.3 World Champonships in Nice, France this September. The very hilly course has 3900 feet of climbing. Knowing that what goes up must come down, she was concerned that her 2018 Quintana Roo with rim brakes and carbon wheels wouldn’t have the braking power she’d need. We worked on a new bike for her.

I carefully measured her old QR’s positional setup. Her new X-PR has proven Shimano 105 shifting with hydraulic disc brakes for maximum stopping power. Vision 60mm deep carbon wheels and the X-PR’s proven aerodynamics will give her the speed she needs on the downhills and flats. And, of course, she loves the Pink Diamond with Holo Blue decal finish. Quintana Roo was amazing in getting us her bike in time for her to get accustomed to it before her race. I set up her new bike as closely as possible to her current position. And she's off!

There’s Just Something About Argon 18 - They’re headquartered in Montreal, with additional European headquarters in Denmark. Their bikes definitely have a European flair. JM’s Nitrogen is a prime example. J had been thinking about a Canyon, but when we conducted a bike fit, we realized that any Canyon he was interested in had a fit that was too aggressive. He had always longed for an Argon 18, and when he rode the Nitrogen that my sales rep dropped off, that was all it took; he was in love with the ride and the look.

Argon prepares their bikes in Montreal, but, as a bike fitter, I appreciate that they leave exactly enough disassembly of the front end (fork steerer left at max length so I have control over the handlebar stack). The result is a semi-custom build that yields the exactly quality and fit that I want to deliver for J. Argon’s Atten 1-piece bar and stem is beautiful and robust. The R6 wheels are from Scope Cycling of the Netherlands. Accessories like an integrated computer mount for the handlebars and 3D-printed bottle cages are included.

Enjoy your Nitrogen J!!! You told me how you used to admire them when you were back in Puerto Rico. It’s funny how the universe goes ‘round!

A sunny, muggy Sunday Morning at Lake Massapoag in Sharon challenged athletes at the Max Performance Sharon Sprint Triathlon, but triathletes are stubborn and resilient and they were up to the task. Grace Bicycles Ambassador Janice G. and I provided tech support at the start, and it was a busy morning of pre-race flat repairs, taking mirrors off bikes (no you can’t have a mirror) and various other mechanical challenges. On the fast, flat bike course, we helped an athlete who was, unfortunately, hit by a car. She was OK and felt that she could keep going, but she was waiting to file a police report as we left. We then helped an athlete whose left crankarm had fallen off; luckily he didn’t fall!!! As a reminder to athletes doing future races, single file riding as far to the right only; we saw a lot of athletes riding in the middle of the road on a course that’s open to traffic.

Hello to Josh, Noah, Andrew, Christine, Keith, Kristen, The New England Tri Fit crew (including Amelia, Ray, Scott, Evan, Steph, Tim, Jackie, Julie, Alex, Mary, Jessica, and the rest), Zsolt, Ally, Joe, Chris, Katie, newbie Michael, Doug and Linda, Stephen, Danielle and Chris, and all the athletes!!!
