A cornbread sandwich deserves a little attention, especially when it comes from a barbecue stop on the way to Alabama’s beaches.

Down South BBQ in Foley features this specialty alongside a menu of smoked meats and familiar barbecue plates. Located at 19891 County Road 10, the restaurant sits between Foley and Gulf Shores, giving hungry travelers another reason to explore beyond the main beach road.

The cornbread sandwich is the item that stands out, but there’s plenty more on the menu. Ribs, pork, beef, sausage, wings, and half-chicken platters give a group several directions to go. Platters come with two sides and Texas toast.

The restaurant also has outdoor tables shaded by umbrellas. That straightforward setup fits a meal built around barbecue, with the food doing most of the talking.

There’s room in a coastal food lineup for something besides seafood. Cornbread and smoked meat bring a familiar Southern combination to a part of Alabama often associated with shrimp baskets and oysters.

For people who enjoy finding the smaller food stops around South Baldwin County, this is one with a distinctive specialty. Sometimes the memorable part of a beach trip is the lunch discovered a few miles before the sand.
