⭐ STORYTIME AT CONOCODELL GOLF CLUB
A sit down conversation with co-owner Mike Davis — hometown roots, world-class golf experience, and a lifelong connection to Fayetteville & Chambersburg.
There’s a heartbeat to Conocodell Golf Club — and when you talk to co-owner Mike Davis, you quickly learn that heartbeat started decades ago, long before ownership, renovations, or band nights.
It began with two Chambersburg kids, a nine hole course in Fayetteville, and a friendship that’s lasted more than 50 years.
🌄 HOMETOWN ROOTS
Mike grew up in Chambersburg, but Fayetteville was part of his story from the beginning. He met co-owner Jim Gordon in 6th grade — basketball teammates, golf teammates, childhood friends who spent countless hours at The Dell. They graduated Chambersburg Area Senior High School class of 1983 together and were on the Trojan Golf team. “We’ve stayed close, literally, for over 50 years.” Even after moving away, the connection never faded. “I may not live there anymore, but I’m still very connected to it.”
🏆 THE WIDER WORLD OF GOLF
Mike’s path took him far beyond Pennsylvania. After winning the 1982 Pennsylvania Junior Championship, he played college golf at Georgia Southern, then worked in Atlanta and South Florida before joining the United States Golf Association.
For 32 years, golf became his world. He officiated Tiger Woods in all nine of his USGA championships. He played with Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Sam Snead. He traveled the globe, ran U.S. Opens, British Opens, and even flew with the Blue Angels.
And today? He’s still designing golf courses — including the highend Apogee Club in Jupiter, Florida. Golf isn’t just something Mike did. It’s who he is.
🏡 THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING (2009)
One day, Jim called. Conocodell might be coming up for sale. Would Mike partner with him? Mike didn’t hesitate. “Jim, I’ll do it… but you have to understand, I can’t be there all the time.” Jim grew up on this course — literally. Conocodell was in his blood. Mike knew Jim could run it day to day, and together they made the leap.
Their longtime friend Steve Cmar joined them — forming the trio that still owns the course today. Stay tuned for his interview! 😊
👥 THE OWNERSHIP TRIO
Jim Gordon - The heartbeat of Conocodell. Sunrise to sunset. Greens mowed, carts prepped, trees tended, golfers greeted — seven days a week. “Conocodell is what it is because of Jim Gordon.”
Steve Cmar - Quiet strength. A steady presence who supports the course whenever he can.
Mike Davis - The global golf mind. Decades of championship experience, design knowledge, and vision.
Together, they’re proof that friendship can become legacy.
🌱 THE PERSONALITY OF CONOCODELL
Mike describes Conocodell with genuine affection: It’s not Pebble Beach. It’s not Augusta National. It’s something better for the everyday golfer. Affordable. Scenic. Community rooted. A place where beginners, retirees, high school golfers, and lifelong players all share the same fairways.
“If you want to play in an hour and a half, two hours, and not break your wallet — Conocodell’s it.”
Every dollar earned goes right back into the course — improved holes, better manicuring, exposed creek views, and now a brandnew practice range being built.
🌟 THE FUTURE
When golfers step onto Conocodell today, Mike hopes they feel welcome, relaxed, and at home. Five years from now? He hopes they feel proud — proud of how far the course has come, proud of what it means to the community, proud to call it their course.
😂 A LITTLE GOLFER HUMOR
Mike’s favorite golfer life-statement: “I swear I’m better than what you just saw.” Because… aren’t we all?
❤️ A LIFE BEYOND GOLF
Mike lives in Jupiter, Florida with his wife, enjoys time with his son, and spends his days designing golf courses, traveling, fishing, and returning to Pennsylvania whenever he can — especially late summer and early fall.
He also recently added a family home in western PA, making those visits even easier.
🏁 CLOSING THOUGHT
From Chambersburg to the USGA Tour… From officiating Tiger Woods to owning a ninehole hometown gem… From childhood friendship to lifelong partnership… Mike Davis’s story reminds us that golf isn’t just a sport — it’s a community. And Conocodell Golf Club is proud to be part of that story.
