“I need you to help me commit a crime.” -Eric, on one of his first calls to the shop, asking us to modify his Campagnolo Record crankset. To help realize his dreams of train-supported bikepacking, Eric wanted a slightly lower gear range than the folder’s factory crank supported, and he happened to have a Campy crank in his bin. So we machined down the outer ring of the handsome, out-of-production Italian crankset to act as a bash guard, and mounted the assembly on his English folding bike. Because, in our view, there’s nothing criminal about wanting lower gears.

Besides, this is a pretty special Brompton North America; Eric Gneckow’s fitted it with a Brooks England B17, Carradice bagman and bag, 日東隆久 plugs, a SPURCYCLE bell, some super-trick SimWorks USA + mkspedal quick-release pedals, and a little decal to celebrate the fact that it’s his favorite color.

We can’t help but mention that, not long after Eric got his Brompton, his partner Sarah picked one up as well! Here’s to hoping they get to take a his-and-hers Brompton train-supported bikepacking trip in the near future.

Thanks for all the love on the Trash Panda at Alsea video! Here are a few stills from the day.

Again, the isn’t *designed* for singletrack, but taking a basketful of sodas up, down and over the trail demonstrates the truly novel frame design’s extraordinary ability to be both nimble and stable at the same time.

To demonstrate some of the special strengths of the + , Seth visited ’ Alsea Falls system, loading the basket with a couple 18-packs of color-coordinated sodas; that’s 31lbs (14kg) of cargo! The low-trail geometry and wide-range double allowed Seth to spin smoothly and track true on the climb, even when things got chonky and the grade pitched upwards of 16 percent! The large, bolt-in frame bag made a safe and handy spot to stash some salty mid-ride snax. The frame-mounted rack (appointed with a basket and cargo web) kept the steering snappy, helping Seth stay on his line for a full-speed descent. And, somehow, after all that, the sodas weren’t even that shaken up by the end of the ride! Maybe it was the high-volume or the 853 tubeset?

Disclaimer: the is *not* designed for singletrack. Keen observers will see Seth swapped his preferred mega-kickstand to one which is more compact; he also used a toestrap to keep it from self-deploying.

In support of our friends at Twilight Bicycle Race Series, we’re suspending this month’s shop social rides and encourage our friends to check out everyone’s favorite local racing series: Twilight CX at Oak Hill. Course opens at 4:30, racing starts at 5:30, ends by sunset (~6:50 pm).

Our shop rides will resume in October!

Before , Seth first realized his kitchen-sink-style dirt touring dreams with his trusty Soma Fabrications tradesman.

The big party piece here is a one-off, spring-loaded basket designed and built by maverick engineer WTH. The other custom part is the steel alt-bar, fabbed up by shop staff and framebuilder Leonardo Cruces, who would later build the “proto-panda.”

Seth made the most of the 20” front end by mounting the most aggressive 406bsd tire known to man—the Kenda Booster Pro—to a super-wide Alienationbmx Vandal rim. From the factory, those rims come drilled for both presta and schrader; naturally, he put in a tubeless valve for each. Rounding out the bikepacking-ready-build are the Alan K rear rack, Ron Andrews , and an alt-double drivetrain built on a well-worn old Deore crank.

Between bikepacking adventures, the Tradesman is also Seth’s daily driver, often running supplies to and from the shop and pulling a trailer to pop-up events around town.

Shop ride this Wednesday! We’ll do the “short” loop of the river path, starting and ending at the shop, with refreshments after.

This ride will also be the WORLD PREMIERE of the Klink Cycles + Liminal Machine Works Trash Panda, a unique and innovative All-Terrain-Touring-Bike (ATTB), envisioned by Seth and manifested by Brian to fill an unoccupied niche in the bike ecosystem, somewhere between a heavy-duty cycletruck and a lightweight dirt-tourer.

If you’re based in Portland, you can of course come see the this weekend at MADE in booth 18, right in the middle of the main hall, along with a few other pieces of Brian’s best work, including Nico’s wild tandem.
