A 24/72 schedule gives firefighters more than additional time between shifts. It gives us an opportunity to organize performance training with greater intent.

Physical preparation matters. So do attention, decision-making, regulation, recovery, and readiness.

The goal is not more training. It is purposeful training. Blog Link:

Fire departments moving toward a 24/72 schedule have an opportunity to rethink more than the work calendar.

The real question is how we use that four-day cycle to deliberately develop firefighter performance. In my new blog, I lay out a 24/72 performance rhythm built around four objectives:

Shift Day: Perform & Manage
Day 1: Recover & Downshift
Day 2: Stress & Integrate
Day 3: Prepare & Sharpen

The emphasis is not just physical training. It is attention, decision-making, cognitive flexibility, regulation under pressure, recovery, and preparing the firefighter to return ready for the next shift.

If the job requires firefighters to think, adapt, communicate, and execute under stress, those skills deserve a place in the training cycle.

This is part of the problem with using “mental health” as a catch-all term. Not everything belongs in the same bucket.

Mental illness, mental distress, mental well-being, and mental performance are related, but they are not interchangeable. When we collapse all of it into one label, we create confusion about roles, scope, and who should be doing what.

Distress does not automatically equal disorder and performance work does not automatically become clinical work just because a person is struggling.

The point is not to minimize anyone’s role. We to be more precise. Better language leads to better role clarity, better referrals, and better support.

Know who you are bringing to the table so they can provide you the best service.

New MPC Blog: Sometimes the Missing Piece Really Is Mental Training

Mental training gets sold sometimes like a power-up: learn to breathe, visualize, think positively and suddenly you’re operating at another level.

That’s not how performance works.

The athlete may already have the strength, skill, conditioning, and technical preparation. The missing piece may be developing the attention, regulation, adaptability, and psychological skills that allow them to consistently access that preparation when pressure enters the environment.

And yes…there is a legitimate Super Saiyan discussion in this one.

🚨 WE’RE LOCKED IN.

This September, Mindful Performance Consulting is teaming up with the YMCA to bring MENTAL GAME READY: Preparing Athletes for What’s Ahead to the Golden Triangle.

This is not a lecture about “thinking positive.” It is a practical mental performance class built for athletes, coaches, and parents who want usable tools for the moments when performance actually gets difficult.

We’ll dig into:

🏆 Building confidence, composure, and focus
🧠 Performing under pressure, stress, nerves, and distractions
🎯 Creating routines that support consistent performance
🤝 Helping coaches and parents build stronger support systems around their athletes

The goal is simple: give athletes tools they can actually use at home, in practice, and when the game is on the line.

📍 Caledonia YMCA
Monday, September 14 | 6:30–8:00 PM
9652 Wolfe Rd., Caledonia, MS 39740

📍 Downtown YMCA
Tuesday, September 22 | 6:30–8:00 PM
602 2nd Ave North, Columbus, MS 39701

If you have a middle school, high school, college-bound athlete, you are a coach or parent one, come spend 90 minutes learning how to better prepare the person behind the performance.

Partnership Announcement!

Mindful Performance Consulting is proud to announce a new partnership with the Frank P. Phillips Memorial YMCA in Columbus.

The YMCA has long served our community by creating opportunities for young people to learn, grow, connect, and lead. Through this partnership, MPC will bring mental performance and mindfulness principles into that mission by helping young people develop greater self-awareness, confidence, emotional regulation, focus, and resilience.

Youth development involves more than physical activity. It means helping young people understand themselves, respond effectively when things become difficult, and build skills they can carry into school, sports, relationships, and life.

We are excited to work together and invest in the young people of the Golden Triangle.

More information about upcoming opportunities will be announced soon.
