Can a skull have personality?

Give four people the same calavera design and twelve colors of sand, and you’ll likely get four completely different pieces of art. One person goes bright and wild. Another becomes unexpectedly meticulous. Someone else discovers that purple, orange and teal belong together after all.

Our Calavera Sand Painting Kit includes four 6-inch designs and twelve colors of sand, so there’s plenty of room to experiment, or plenty to share. The sand sticks to the board as you work, so your artwork stays with you, and clear sleeves help protect the finished pieces.

What's an ofrenda?

One of our favorite parts of ***os is the ofrenda, the altar families create to welcome and remember the people they've lost. Alongside photographs and candles, families often add favorite foods, drinks, flowers, and small objects that say something about the person being remembered. An ofrenda can be as individual as the person it celebrates.

Our new Día de los Mu***os Sand Painting Kit includes four calavera sand paintings, plus a booklet that introduces the tradition and shows you how to create a simple ofrenda of your own.

You don't need anything elaborate. Sometimes one photograph, one favorite food, or one good story is enough to begin.

If you’ve ever wondered why skulls are everywhere during ***os(DAY OF THE DEAD), there’s the reason. —the colorful, decorated skulls associated with the holiday—aren’t meant to be frightening. They’re playful reminders that death is part of life, and that the people we love can still be remembered with color, humor and joy.

That’s what inspired our new Calavera Sand Painting Kit. Instead of paint or markers, you uncover the specially cut design a section at a time, pour on brilliantly colored sand, and watch your calavera appear. It’s part art project, part sensory experience—and surprisingly hard to stop once you start.

Inside are four custom calavera (skull) designs and twelve colors of sand — perfect for gathering around a table with family or friends (or settling in on your own) to create something colorful while remembering someone who's been part of your life.

Because you're working with sand, it's more like play than pressure to "make art." Pour it, rub it, mix it, brush away the extra — no drawing skills required, and every calavera comes out different. The kit also includes a booklet on Día de los Mu***os and ideas for building your own ofrenda (altar).

Boston area friends, we’ve officially hit that stretch of winter where the cold feels personal. Two snowstorms, icy roads, and the kind of weather that makes you look out the window and decide you do not, in fact, need groceries.

Staying home is cozy… until it starts to feel like you’ve been living inside a snow globe.

So we scheduled something that fits this moment perfectly: a Sand Mandala Class on the evening of March 6 at Backyartists Art Studio (because sensory play is not just for kids!)

A is an ancient circle symbol of wholeness. Circles have no beginning and no end, which is maybe exactly what winter feels like right now… but have a way of turning that “endless” feeling into something grounding and comforting.
