My father couldn’t put down his story. So I couldn’t say goodbye to my grandmother.
He’s been carrying what happened 40 years ago, and at the end, his old story was bigger than my grandmother’s last days.
That’s what an old story does when we stay attached to it. It stops being the past. It starts making decisions in the present.
In constellations, we ask: whose story is this, and is it still yours to carry?
I see a smaller version of this every week with separated parents. The old story walks into the co-parenting, and the child pays for what the parents won’t put down.
After Us is where we learn to put the story down. The relationship may end. Parenting doesn’t.
