Joe and Janice recently wrapped up two days fishing the Madison River with our owner and guide Nate.

We’re incredibly grateful for the clients who choose to fish with Trout On The Fly year after year. Getting to reconnect, spend more time on the water together, and add a few more Montana memories to the collection is what it’s all about.

First time fly fishing? Sam jumped right into the action! 🎣

First-timer Sam joined our owner and guide Nate on the Madison River this past week and got a taste of what makes fly fishing in Montana so special.

You don’t need years of experience to enjoy a day on the water. Our guides love introducing new anglers to the sport, helping them learn the ropes, and—hopefully—getting them hooked on fly fishing from day one.

Great job, Sam! We hope this was the first of many days with a fly rod in hand.

UPDATE: Daily fishing restrictions, commonly known as hoot-owl restrictions, have been lifted for several rivers in southwestern Montana with cooling water temperatures.

Restrictions have been removed for the Gallatin, Jefferson, Ruby and Shields rivers. The following updates have been made for the Madison River:

- The restriction immediately upstream of Ennis Reservoir and the closure downstream of the reservoir have been removed.
- A hoot-owl restriction remains in effect upstream of Hebgen Reservoir to the boundary of Yellowstone National Park.
- A hoot-owl restriction remains in effect from the Bureau of Land Management’s Warm Springs boat launch to the confluence with the Jefferson River.

Drought-related fishing closures and restrictions also remain in effect for the Beaverhead and Big Hole rivers.

These restrictions were implemented because of warm water temperatures. Hoot-owl restrictions prohibit fishing from 2 p.m. to midnight each day to prevent excessive fish mortality from angling when water temperatures are warm. Full closures prohibit angling for the entire day.

Water conservation efforts continue to be important to Montana’s fisheries. Staff with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks are working with irrigators and other partners to improve flows and other instream conditions where possible.

Anglers can reduce stress on fish at all times of the year by getting the fish to the net or in hand quickly, keeping them in the water, and reviving them before releasing them back into the river.

(News Release Update) Yellowstone lifts full closures for Firehole, Madison and Gibbon rivers. Partial restrictions remain in effect from 2 p.m. to sunrise the following day.

Effective Friday, Aug. 28, anglers can fish the Firehole, Madison and Gibbon (downstream of Norris Campground) rivers and all associated tributaries from sunrise until 2 p.m. each day. Cooling weather and water temperatures, as well as precipitation in the current weather forecast, allow for the previous full closures to be lifted.

The full closures were implemented on July 15 because low water flows and high water temperatures exceeding 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius) can be lethal to fish. Water temperatures have cooled at night, allowing for fishing for part of the day. Anglers can fish on most other park rivers, streams and lakes daily from sunrise to sunset as specified in the 2026 Fishing Regulations booklet.

Staff will continue to monitor the water temperatures. Temporary restrictions may be lifted, or additional closures may be put in place, depending on condition assessments.

A banner day on the Gallatin! 🎣

Our guide Chandler Hill spent the day with Shelby and Doug fishing the Gallatin River inside Yellowstone National Park, and it was one of those days that reminds us just how special fishing in Yellowstone can be.

Great fishing, great company, and an incredible setting—hard to ask for much more than that!

One and a half days, four buddies, two guides, and plenty of Madison River time. 🎣

Our fantastic guide Jarrett just wrapped up a great trip with Nick W. and three of his buddies, with guide Drew leading the crew on day two.

They spent their first full day fishing the Madison from the drift boats, then switched things up for their final half day by floating into a wade-only section and getting out to fish.

Same legendary river, two different ways to experience it—and a great way to spend a couple of days with friends in Montana.

Two days on the Madison River with great company and plenty of time on the water. 🎣

Clients George and Renee joined our guide Jarrett for a full-day float followed by a half-day float on August 18 & 19. Jarrett shared a couple of photos from their time together, and it looks like another Montana adventure well spent!

15 years old, two days in Yellowstone, and catching fish on flies he tied himself. 🎣👏

Braydon recently spent two days fishing with Trout On The Fly inside Yellowstone National Park. Day one took him to the Gallatin River with our guide Rick, followed by a second day on the Lamar River with our guide Chandler.

Both guides came back saying the same thing: this kid is an incredible fly angler.

Even cooler? Braydon tied a bunch of his own flies for the trip—and then went out and caught fish on them. There’s something pretty special about fooling a Yellowstone trout with a fly you created yourself.
Way to go, Braydon! We have a feeling there are a whole lot more great days on the water ahead for this young angler.
