Fart-hinder Racing was born 16 years ago when Tim got a phone call from Darrell J Peterson about building a car for an upcoming ChumpCar race at Brainerd International Raceway. A 1992 Saab 900S was pressed into service and became a race car over the next two months. Much of the work was done by Greg Wold , John Hogdal , and Darrell. Unfortunately the engine failed early in the race. But the Saab continued to race for several years with other drivers, and was eventually replaced by a 1999 Saab 9³.

Once the engine was running, I drove the 96 out of the garage and back in to put it up on the Quick Jack. Wheels off and inspecting the front suspension.

The temperature got above 50° today, just right for working on cars in the garage. Fired up the engine on the "new" Fart-hinder Racing Saab 96. Fresh non-oxy 91 octane, fresh Lucas 2-stroke oil, from a clean gas can. The foam in the fuel cell is probably 15+ years old so it will need to be replaced.

The 9900, 1973 99 with a 16-valve engine from a 900, has finally made it into the barn for the rest of the winter. The temperature was above freezing for a change and the engine started right up. Rearranging the garage for more space, shuffling other cars, and Sub-Zero temps delayed getting it under cover.

A long nose engine (1965-68) in a bullnose car (1956-64) creates an interesting dilemma, where to route the coolant hoses. The radiator is in front of the engine on a long nose Saab, but behind and above the engine in the earlier cars. As you can see the hose from the water pump housing to the radiator on this '64 Saab is just above the exhaust manifold, with a wad of insulation to keep it from melting. I know Ed Todd has made this engine swap, and will be sending photos. I'm curious to see what other creative solutions have been tried, successful and not so successful.

Made it into the garage. A couple of heaters were fired up to warm it up and melt this morning's snow.

The plan has been to combine parts from these three 1960 SAAB 93Fs to make one vintage race car. The plan has changed. Details soon.
