BRAZIL NUTS! “Brazil nuts are one of my favorite longevity foods because just one nut provides a remarkable amount of selenium, a mineral involved in antioxidant protection, thyroid health, immune function, and healthy cellular aging.” Swipe --> Fir the science and details.
Their standout feature is selenium. Brazil nuts are one of the richest natural food sources of selenium, which the body uses to make antioxidant enzymes that help protect cells from oxidative damage. Selenium is also important for thyroid function, immune function, DNA production, and reproduction. They also contain magnesium, copper, zinc, vitamin E, fiber, protein, and mostly unsaturated fats. Research on Brazil nuts has found improvements in selenium status and antioxidant defenses, and some studies suggest beneficial effects on inflammation, blood-vessel function, glucose regulation, and other cardiometabolic markers. The important catch is that more is not better. One Brazil nut can contain roughly 70–90 mcg of selenium, while the adult recommended amount is around 55 mcg/day and the upper limit is 400 mcg/day. So 1 Brazil nut a day, or perhaps 1–2, is plenty for most people. Regularly eating handfuls can push selenium intake too high.
