Seven new black belts. 🥋⚫️🔴
Congratulations to the JM Modern Jiu Jitsu black belt class of 2026:
Micah Morris
Cheney Joseph
Evan McDermott
Thomas Gray
Daniel Capello
Max Lauro
Josh Brumfield
Six of these seven walked in our doors as white belts and earned every single belt along the way from Coach Josh. Homegrown from day one. Number 7 comes originally comes from Shawn Gayton who did a phenomenal job with Thomas before we were able to take him on.

Years of hard rounds, tough days, and showing up when it would have been easier not to. This belt isn’t the finish line. It’s proof you never stopped going forward. So proud to have you guys rep us as JM Modern Blackbelts
A special shout out to Micah and Cheney, the two from our 6am crew. They spent the second half of their journey training mornings under Coach Jeremy DePrato, who has done an incredible job with them. As a newly minted second degree black belt (the rank required to promote someone to black belt), Jeremy co promoted these guys along side me.

Side control escape! The running man escape works extremely well when your opponent is blocking your hip and head or if they are very dominant with a cross Pace and turning into them just isn’t working the key points. Here are don’t give the bottle hook and making sure that you’re on your shoulder not your neck.

It’s beautiful to see the links at which people will go in order to train Jiu Jitsu ever since I started this sport there’s always been a crew at every gym that shows up at 6 AM and I don’t know what it is about those guys but they go hard AF! It’s always a grind. I think it’s just something about the type of person you have to be to get up that early and train that hard. It’s a special breed and I’ve got so much respect for all you guys it was really a lot of fun to hang out this morning. Jeremy has done a phenomenal job with the 6 AM program. I genuinely could not be happier. Jeremy is as solid as they come so that being said if you’re one of these 6 AM grinders out there in our gym or any other, just know that you have my total respect.
