WHY WE LOVE THE TURKISH GET-UP 💪

The Turkish Get-Up is one of those movements that looks simple… until you actually do it correctly.

You start flat on your back, finish standing with a weight overhead, and then reverse the entire movement back to the floor.

That means your body has to coordinate the shoulder, core, hips, legs, and trunk through multiple planes of motion—all while keeping a load stable overhead.

And there’s actually some science behind it.

Researchers using EMG have found significant shoulder-muscle involvement throughout the Turkish Get-Up, with particularly high muscular demand during portions of the movement where you transition from the floor and sweep the leg underneath the body. (PubMed)

So what are we training?

🔥 Shoulder stability
You aren’t simply pressing the weight—you’re controlling and stabilizing it while the rest of your body moves underneath it.

🔥 Core strength & anti-rotation
Your trunk has to resist unwanted twisting and collapsing as you move from lying → sitting → kneeling → standing.

🔥 Hip mobility & stability
Bridging, sweeping the leg and transitioning through half-kneeling require your hips to move AND stabilize.

🔥 Coordination & body awareness
The Get-Up is essentially seven movements linked together. Your brain has to continually organize your body around the load.

🔥 Strength you can actually use
Instead of isolating one muscle, you’re teaching the body to transfer force from the ground, through the trunk, and into the upper extremity.

The Turkish Get-Up has even been described in the rehabilitation literature as a way to progressively develop strength, endurance and motor control through full-body movement. (PubMed)

And here’s the important part:

You don’t have to go heavy.

A slow, controlled Get-Up with a moderate kettlebell can expose weaknesses VERY quickly.

If you can move a heavy weight from the floor to standing while keeping it controlled overhead the entire time…

you’ve got more than strength.

You’ve got control.

Make it sleek and sexy before you go up in weight.

PLEASE READ:
I have an Athlete named Patricia.
She’s 50 today and for her birthday, she decided to make it to the gym.
She did 65 # barbell:
The complex of Full Clean, Hang Full Clean, Jerk every :30 for 12 minutes.
Compared to an average American Woman here in 2026, what percentile do you estimate that she is in?

🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡
Yeah — that’s legitimately impressive for a 50-year-old woman compared with the general U.S. population.

There isn’t a national database that lets us directly percentile-rank a 65-lb clean + hang clean + jerk EMOM-style complex, so this has to be an estimate. But we have useful population data to anchor it.

Patricia did:

65 lb
Full clean → hang full clean → jerk
Every :30 × 12 minutes = 24 rounds

That means 48 full cleans/hang cleans + 24 jerks = 72 loaded barbell movements in 12 minutes, assuming she completed every interval.

For perspective, CDC data show that only about 24% of women ages 45–64 even meet the basic recommendation for muscle-strengthening exercise twice per week. And what Patricia did isn’t merely resistance exercise—Olympic lifting requires strength, power, mobility, coordination, and the conditioning to repeat those movements under short rest.

My estimate

Compared with all American women who are 50 years old, I’d put that performance somewhere around the:

🔥 95th–98th percentile

In other words, I’d estimate she’s physically capable of something that perhaps only 2–5 out of every 100 women her age could successfully perform as prescribed.

And I wouldn’t be surprised if Olympic-lifting competency itself puts her toward the extreme end of the distribution. Most American women her age aren’t regularly strength training, much less repeatedly catching a full-depth clean and putting a bar overhead every 30 seconds. Current ACSM literature specifically emphasizes resistance and power training as important because strength and power become increasingly important with aging.

And doing it on her 50th birthday is a pretty damn good advertisement for what consistent CrossFit can preserve at 50.

Manuel has been here for years, and we saw him become a bad ass.
Then he said that he had to take some time off to go beat a little bit of cancer real quick, which he did.
When we saw him, he moved slower but he had a smile every step of the way.
He got back in working order but knew at some point a major hip surgery was in the cards.
Again, he took a good amount of time off.
I mean this is like starting from 0 over and over again.
Each time, he approaches that challenge with a smile on his face and doing the best he can.
- If you have a long road ahead, just start, smile, and be glad you can do what you can do, even if it’s what you would think isn’t that much.
Hell yeah, Manuel!

TURN BACK THE CLOCK.

Left: Karla — 2017.
Right: Karla — 2026.

Nine years between these two pictures.

And somebody forgot to tell Karla how this whole “getting older” thing is supposed to work.

Because the years kept moving forward…
but she damn sure didn’t go quietly with ’em.

This is what happens when you keep showing up. When you keep putting your hands on heavy s**t. When you keep choosing strength. When you refuse to accept that your best years have to be behind you just because another birthday rolls around.

Nine years later — stronger. More muscle. More powerful. More dangerous.

That’s the beautiful thing about training.

You can’t stop the clock.

But you can make that mo********er regret counting you out.

Karla is living proof. 🤘

2017 ➡️ 2026

Keep training.
Keep fighting.
Keep turning that f**kin’ clock BACK.

Just got back☀️
On our final day, I sat next to a lady while on a Catamaran and while we opened up about life, her husband explained to us that the wife was on borrowed time.
A terminal brain cancer.
She was months past the date issued to her.
-I had some reflection in order.
I sat on the Jamaican beach and thought damn…. I love CrossFit. I wish the members, the coaches, all of them, were here right now.
I thought, we have this time right now to be a healthy version of ourselves, and while time won’t last forever, we can create our best hedge against “poor quality of life”.
Bob Marley answered a really interesting take when someone asked if he was rich.
His answer reflected on life, his relationship with others, and love.
We’re grateful for the people that choose to spend this portion of their lives making Voodoo that “third place”. We really attempt to offer something that will have you look back at down the road and say, man- I loved that place. That was a great moment in life.
Thanks to the members and coaches for holding down the fort while we took time to get out of dodge.
16 years, let’s fu***ng go.

It used to be tedious. Now, it couldn’t be easier.
🤩🤩🤩
It used to be counting blocks with Zone. Then it was MyFitnessPal. Cumbersome.
It’s easy: Hey GPT, I want to be the best CrossFit athlete, please fuel me appropriately.
***This prompt says: I don’t want to carry excess bodyfat and I want to be strong and have a ton of energy. ***
From here, that lady in your phone will tell you exactly what to eat with the things you have on hand.
There has never been a moment in time where this was easier.
