We are SO excited to share some HUGE news!! We were honored to be selected as the FIRST recipient of a new grant from the Council for Responsible Sport, funded by donations from runners of the 2026 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, to support our journey toward becoming a Responsible-Sport Certified Event! We share the Council's mission and vision of creating socially and environmentally responsible events that make a difference in our communities. We could not be more thrilled for this national recognition of our efforts, and of our potential, and of our wonderful runners, volunteers, sponsors, and spectators! And we are more than happy to recognize that we are building on the amazing community groundwork already laid in Athens by the Athens Road Runners, Athens Running Company, Fleet Feet Athens & Oconee, Athfest Educates and the AthHalf, and so many others! Thank you to everyone who had any part in getting us here, and we are beyond thrilled that this grant brings support and recognition not only to the Classic City Marathon but to our entire amazing Classic City.
🏅 Meet the first recipient of the CRS Opportunity Fund: the Classic City Marathon in Athens, Georgia! The Classic City Marathon
Through the generosity of our 2026 Bank of America Chicago Marathon runners & fundraisers, The Classic City Marathon will embark on a four-year responsible sport certification journey. The fund will cover the first year of the event’s four-year responsible sport certification journey. Over those four years, the Classic City Marathon will work to strengthen its practices in areas such as waste reduction, responsible purchasing, community impact, access and inclusion, and environmental responsibility.
Every dollar raised through the 2026 Bank of America Chicago Marathon supports our Opportunity Fund that helps emerging and under-resourced events earn Responsible Sport Certification. This is the ripple effect of your generosity. 💚 To donate, click the link in our bio.
