Do as I say, not as I do. (Just joking. Mostly.)

Here’s the truth about being a Love Coach who is also a Communication Professor in the last two weeks of semester:

The advice I give? Absolutely correct.

My own implementation right now? A work in progress. 😂

But this is actually the point ~ openness isn’t something you achieve when life slows down.

It’s something you practice in the middle of the mess.

Even when you’re tired.

Even when your to-do list is unreasonable.

Even when the most romantic thing in your evening is a fresh cup of tea and ten minutes of silence.

You can still be someone who is open to love.

The semester has ended. (This was me last week.)

And I have a whole summer of adventures planned that I cannot wait to share with you.

Professor by day. Lovergirl by summer. 😉

Here’s the pattern I see most often in the women who find love quickly:

They stopped treating dates like interviews and started treating them like conversations.

Not “does he meet my criteria” but “who is this person really?”

Not “is this going anywhere” but “what might surprise me about him?”

That shift ~ from agenda to curiosity ~ changes everything about how connection forms.

And as someone who has spent twenty years studying human communication, I can tell you this isn’t just a mindset thing.

When we approach another person with genuine curiosity, we signal safety. We create space. We become someone they want to open up to.

And that is the foundation every great love story is built on.

The good news? Curiosity is completely learnable. It’s not something you either have or don’t. It’s a skill. And it’s one of the first things we work on together.

Okay I’m going to say the thing.

The height requirement many of us carry around? We didn’t actually choose it. It was handed to us by a culture that told us we needed to feel physically small next to a man to feel safe, feminine, & desired.

And we just... accepted it. Without question. And have been filtering out amazing humans ever since.

Now ~ if height is genuinely important to you, that’s yours to own. No judgment.

But if you’ve never actually examined WHY it’s on the list? That’s worth five minutes of honest reflection.

Because nobody has ever looked back on an epic love story and thought “too bad he wasn’t 6 feet tall.”

They thought:

He made me feel seen. I felt so loved. He made me laugh more than anyone I know. He cherished me. He was an amazing lover.

Right??!

Hot take: Your non-negotiables list might be doing you more harm than good.

Not because you shouldn’t have standards ~ you absolutely should! But because most of us have never actually examined the difference between what we truly need and what we’ve just... always assumed we needed.

Your non-negotiables? Those are yours. Integrity. Kindness. Genuine emotional availability. The things that actually make love work. YES to those!

But your *negotiables* ~ the ones you’ve perhaps held for a looooong time, but not questioned ~ those are worth a second look.

Does he *have* to live in your city - or are you actually open to a long-distance dynamic?

Does he *have* to be a certain height?
Does he *have* to fit the exact picture you’ve been carrying around since you were 25?

Because some of those pictures were handed to us.

And they’ve been quietly running the show ever since.

The ONE shift that changed everything for me ~ and for the women I work with ~ was learning to tell the difference.

Nobody talks about this part; the seasons where openness to romantic love feels hard.

Not because you’ve given up on love but because you’re carrying something heavy. Grief. An aging parent. Divorce. A loss or ending that changed the shape of your life.

Those seasons are real. And they’re part of your story ~ not an interruption of it.

What I’ve seen, over and over, is that women who have lived through hard things bring something extraordinary to love. They’re not shrinking or auditioning or trying to be enough.

They’ve already been through enough to know who they are.

And that kind of woman ~ open, discerning, genuinely curious about who shows up ~ is magnetic in ways that have nothing to do with age or timing or any of the things she’s been told to worry about.

You are not behind. You are seasoned. And there is a profound difference.

No judgment. For realsssss.

But if January looked a lot like last January in your dating life ~ and the January before that ~ it might be worth asking why.

Not because something is wrong with you.
NOTHING is wrong with you.

But because wanting love and actually moving toward it are two different things.

And the gap between them is usually not more time, or more self-work, or a better dating app.

It’s usually just one decision ~ to do something different.

Three quarters of 2026 still ahead of you.
