Soundwave Handbell Choir The specialized music program for developmentally disabled students in the Abilene ISD. Cathy Taylor directed Abilene Gold from 1997 to her retirement in 2015.

The Woodson Handbell Choir, and up until recently, “Abilene Gold”, began in 1978 as part of a specialized music program for developmentally disabled students in the Abilene Independent School District. Using a system of adaptive music notation developed by the group’s original director, Letha McGrew, the bell choir began performing in and around Abilene, making audiences aware of the potential of

students with special needs. The program is now under the direction of Eric Logan. Comprised of students from both Abilene High School and Cooper high School, the group has performed hundreds of concerts in the Abilene area for schools, retirement centers, hospitals, churches, civic groups and community events. They have also performed for state and national conventions. In December of 1991, the bell choir traveled to Washington, D.C., to perform in the White House. In 2003, the Woodson Skill Center was awarded the AGEHR National Exemplary Award for Handbells/Handchimes in Music Education. The Texas Rangers have invited the Woodson Handbell Choir to perform the national anthem at baseball games multiple times. In 2005, the handbell choir performed for the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers national conference. Abilene Gold performed in 2011 for the “Arts Education Days at the Capitol” celebration in the rotunda of the capitol in Austin.
