📣 Ever wonder how a 7-man football officiating crew works in Texas High School Football?
In varsity-level games — especially playoffs — a 7-man crew ensures every inch of the field is covered for fair, safe play.
🔎 Here’s the breakdown:
👨⚖️ Referee (R) – The crew chief. Stands behind the QB and focuses on the quarterback, the passer, and the backfield.
📏 Umpire (U) – Positioned behind the defensive line. Watches the line play, illegal blocks, and snaps.
🎯 Head Linesman (H) – Works the sideline on the line of scrimmage. Watches for offside, encroachment, and sideline plays.
🚨 Line Judge (L) – Opposite the Head Linesman. Covers false starts, motion, and sideline activity on their side.
🚀 Field Judge (F) – Deep official on the same side as the Line Judge. Helps with deep passes and coverage downfield.
🛡️ Side Judge (S) – Deep official on the Head Linesman’s side. Also helps cover receivers, pass interference, and timing.
🎥 Back Judge (B) – Stands deep behind the defense. Watches the deepest action, the play clock, and the secondary.

📌 Why it matters: With 22 players and countless split-second decisions, a 7-man crew brings precision, fairness, and control to every game.
