A day of branding calves. This time it went a lot smoother, nobody got bucked off, we were more efficient both in our roping and ground crew work. Calves were vaccinated, tagged and branded with minimal fuss and I caught more than double what I caught last time,….. nobody was more surprised than me!

I’ve gained a great appreciation of the skill level involved in all areas of this process and how it can quickly become dangerous to all humans and animals involved if not approached the right way.
Very great full to Martin Black for drawing on his lifetime of experience to set us up well and prepare us for this experience.

We shaved a couple of hours off the trip by dismantling the fence and going over it, in true western style.
My hobble belt came in handy and we were back all in the same day 👍

Need something to look forward to over winter? These clinics are great for adults returning to riding, experienced people who have new horses, people with young horses who want a safe place to take them to socialise and learn and anyone wanting to learn more about how to do things a bit differently to get different results.

Well I guess winter is officially here.

Went to the Bruneau Ranch Rodeo, who knew these existed, all roping events. Saw some pretty handy men and women competing including three who we branded with the previous weekend. It was like someone pressed the fast forward button!

Michelle has helped us out with last minute float hire before and this is so unfair for a small business. Let's all keep a look out for these people and the float.

I think we could see Montana from there.

Ranch School, with Martin Black Update: Today we had our first branding. I was the only one roping who had never roped in a branding before.
We were supposed to do it yesterday but it was postponed due to a fire at the ranch, but that’s another story.
We did a small number of calves, about 50, and were joined by three Indians from the local reservation who were excellent ropers. I did my share of roping and made a few catches, made a ton of mistakes, have only minor injuries and learned a lot.
At the end of the day we all counted our fingers and everyone still had five on each hand so it was a good day!!!!!

No photos or videos were taken, we were all too busy but I have a couple of photos from my weekend off where I went to Salmon, Idaho and was fortunate enough to participate in a branding as ground crew thanks to Andrew, a fellow student rancher/cowboy.
