Simple Steps.
Healthier eating can be easy.
Why not start by taking one simple step?
Take for example the traditional chocolate weetbix slice I have made.
Tweaks that I made:
Reduced the amount of sugar down.
Added some chopped dates and some chopped Brazil nuts to the slice mixture. Brazil nuts have benefits for cognitive health and blood sugar control.
Replaced the slice icing with melted chocolate, used a block of Whittakers 72% Dark Ghana.
Sprinkled on the chocolate…
Some soy protein crisps – a satisfying crunch, with boosting protein intake.
Pistachio nuts – for protein, potassium and fibre.
Almonds – a good source of vitamin E and antioxidants.
Dried cranberries – for urinary tract health.
Do these tweaks make this a healthy food?
No!
It still has 185g of butter in the mixture.
But with portion control it offers me a wee treat between delivering group fitness classes.
Making small healthy swaps can lead to significant health benefits.

Perhaps catching the eBus from Nelson/Stoke to Richmond may be a solution.
Did you know that passengers with Super Gold Concessions travel free with a Bee card between 9am – 3pm.
A shout-out to Karen, who uses the eBus to travel from Nelson to Richmond to attend Aqua Gentle twice a week.
Aqua Gentle is a 30-minute strength and balance class held on Mondays at 11.00am and Thursdays at 10.30am. Cost: $8 per session.

The assault bike can be an intimating looking piece of gym equipment.
Even a few seconds of all-out effort leaves you gasping for breath.
The assault bike is a great piece of equipment for interval training.
Muscles worked with the assault bike or sometimes known as the air bike are:
Quadriceps, Hamstrings, Glutes, Core, Shoulders and Calves.

Strength training does not just mean lifting the heaviest weights in the gym.
A factor in healthy ageing is muscle strength.
Strength training is very important, as Sarcopenia the age-related loss of muscle mass and strength, leads to reduced physical function and mobility.
As muscle strength declines, the risk of falls increases and mobility decreases.

Being creative with the Pilates ring at Kickstart to Wellness. Plus great fun answers to the A – Z dual-tasking game.

Lesson this week included dual tasking exercises for cognitive training.
Resistance bands and dumbbells for strengthening.
Core strengthening with seated exercises using the Pilates rings.

Kickstart to Wellness - Wednesdays 10.00am.
A fun rehabilitation community fitness class held in the Holy Trinity Hall, 27 Dorset Street, Richmond.
Seated and standing options.
Education delivered on how to incorporate daily functional fitness into your daily life.
Cost: $8 for a 60-minute session.
