🍄 Mushroom Mondays 🍄
Spotted on the forest floor this week — the incredible Blue Pinkgill, or werewere-kōkako.
At first glance it almost looks unreal, like something out of a fantasy film. That deep indigo blue isn’t a trick of the light — it’s the real deal, and it’s one of the few naturally blue mushrooms in the world.
Even better, its Māori name werewere-kōkako is in reference to the North Island kōkako, whose vivid blue wattles match this mushroom almost perfectly. Once you see the connection, you can’t unsee it.
You’ll usually find these tucked away in native forests, quietly doing their job breaking down organic matter and keeping the ecosystem ticking along.
Keep your eyes peeled next time you’re out walking… nature’s full of surprises if you slow down enough to notice.
