There was a time when the only matches shown on TV were European Cup games.
At 21, it was natural to be mesmerised by the Real Madrid of Puskás, Gento and Di Stéfano. Less so when you were about to face them in the final.
Before Inter vs Real Madrid, Luis Suárez had to snap Sandro Mazzola out of it: “We’re going out there to play. Are you staying here to watch?”
His answer? A 3-1 win and two goals against Los Blancos.
Sandro was a son of Inter in more ways than one. He lost his father Valentino at six in the Superga tragedy, and Veleno Lorenzi took him under his wing.
“Inter gave me something priceless: a chance.” Mazzola repaid it with 565 appearances, wearing just one shirt.
After the final in Vienna, Puskás gave him his shirt: “I saw your father play. You are worthy of him.”
He carried a legendary surname. Through class, determination and perseverance, he made his own name legendary too.
He passed away on San Siro’s 100th anniversary, having lifted the European Cup in that very stadium.
Today, Milan bids him farewell for the final time.

Sandro era un figlio dell’Inter, quasi letteralmente. P***e suo padre Valentino a sei anni nella tragedia di Superga e Veleno Lorenzi lo prese sotto la sua ala.
«L’Inter mi ha dato una cosa che non aveva prezzo: una possibilità ». Mazzola la ripagò con 565 presenze e una sola maglia.
Dopo quella finale di Vienna, Puskás gli regalò la sua maglia: «Ho visto giocare tuo padre. Sei degno di lui».
Portava un cognome leggendario e con classe, tenacia e perseveranza ha reso leggendario anche il suo nome.
Se ne è andato nel giorno dei 100 anni di San Siro, lui che lì aveva vinto la Coppa dei Campioni.
Oggi Milano lo saluta per l’ultima volta.
