Hi Everyone, Please read through
Fingal County Council Beach/Foreshore Bye-Laws 2026. I have added a link below and screenshots of the section referring to angling, bathing areas (screenshot 1.1) and SPA and SAC's (screenshot 1.2). The way I read it is fishing will be banned in any designated bathing areas in north Dublin. However, it also includes a ban on fishing on any blue flag or candidate blue flag beach, which include Donebate beach and Portmarnoch beach. These are the two of main beaches where anglers fish in north Dublin. The by-law also proposes that "No fishing shall be allowed in any SAC or SPA areas" which include Malahide Estuary, Rogerstown Estuary, Baldoyle bay and Howth head among others, again very popular with anglers all year round.
Basically it looks like fishing will be banned on the majority of the north Dublin coast with a fine of up to €1250.
For the first time in 15 years we have seen a massive increase in the amount of kids and youths getting into fishing in the area. We have at least 20 to 30 kids coming into to the shop on any day to pick up bait to go fishing. if this proposed by-law goes through it would put sea angling in north Dublin out of reach for all these kids along with everyone else.
Considering the amount of research that documents the positive mental and physical benefits of angling this seems like a very backwards step by Fingal.
