Lios Tuathail athletes Grace Guiney (U11) and รine Quilter (U12) proudly represented the club at the Munster Combined Events Championships in MTU Cork.
Despite a blustery day, the sunshine rather than the rain gave everyone a welcome boost. A record 41 competitors took part in the U11 competition, with Grace finishing an outstanding 7th place overall.
Grace began her day with the 60m sprint, clocking 9.50 seconds to place 3rd overall. She then produced a massive 3.74m long jump, the best jump of the day. This was followed by a 4.96m shot put throw, which moved her into 1st place overall. The final event, the 600m, is what makes combined events so exciting. Grace ran a fantastic race, leaving every ounce of energy on the track. Her time of 2:23 saw changes at the top of the leaderboard, but with combined events being points-based, her final total of 690 points and 7th-place finish is a testament to her all-round athletic ability.
In the U12 Pentathlon, รine started with the sprint, recording a time of 9.95 seconds, which placed her 32nd overall out of 46 athletes. With four events still to come, there was plenty of opportunity to climb the rankings.
รine then completed the long jump, making sure she secured a measured jump of 3.47m. Next came the high jump, where she achieved a personal best of 1.17m, moving well inside the top 20. The shot put proved to be her strongest event, with a throw of 6.60m, the second-best throw of the competition, setting her up perfectly for the final event, the 600m.
รine ran the 600m brilliantly and crossed the line in a strong 2:05, with the tank well and truly empty. Her efforts earned her a superb 13th-place finish with a total of 997 points.
Combined events are among the most well-rounded competitions in athletics, with athletes spending much of the four-hour event competing alongside and supporting their peers. That sense of camaraderie is one of the true values of taking part.
๐ A huge well done to our two stars, Grace and รine, for representing the club so proudly.
๐ Finally, best of luck to our sole boysโ representative, Daryl Mongey, who competes in the U11 Quadrathlon at MTU Cork tomorrow. Dylan O Connell will also be competing in the u11.
