Midleton RFC has been a senior club since 1998 and has a long history prior to this. Founded in 1927, the club has grown massively to become a steadfast institution in Midleton that it is today. We field teams across a variety of age groups from u7s to senior, each of which is competitive beyond doubt. Our bar and function room are available for hire for private events.

“The friendships that you make here, the welcome you get”

What made you join Midleton RFC?

“My husband Patrick, or the Major as he was known, was involved. He had played rugby in school and was approached to get I involved by the founding members. He also designed the Devil on the crest we have today, so that has a special place in my heart”

Who was the first person at the club who made you feel welcome?

“John Williams, Rossa’s father. Myself and Pat White used to go around with John’s hat at matches, collecting a few bob for the new pitch, it was great fun”

What’s your best memory in Towns Park?

“Seeing my sons and now my grandsons wearing the journey, from u10 all the way up to senior”

Any story you’d like to tell?

“I have a very special memory of meeting some players after my husband died, who were very thankful for his guidance when he was their coach. They told me only for him and Midleton RFC, they’d have gone down the wrong road”

What’s something about the club that outsiders wouldn’t understand?

“The friendships that you make here, the welcome you get”

What advice would you give to a new member walking into the club today?

“Introduce yourself to everybody, and you’ll be more than welcome and made feel right at home”

What would you say is your favourite sound in Towns Park?

“Oh, the song. Red is the jersey we wear upon on backs, I sing it away to myself often at home”

And last question then, what does Midleton RFC mean to you?

“Everything as a club. Thanks for all the lovely memories to the people of Midleton Rugby Club”

What first brought you to the club?

“Myself & Eddie Farrell came up because JC Colbert was having a training session here on the old cricket field. We heard about this new game called rugby, which was just brought into the town a couple of years of previous & we just said we come up and have a go”

What would you say was your greatest day in the club?

“Qualifying for the All Ireland League. It was the day after the Good Friday agreement, on Easter Saturday 1998. I was Head Coach at the time”

Who was the standout player on that team?

“Damon Ulrich, Keith Birdthistle and Niall Murphy”

And was there any game in particular from that season that stood out?

“Naas. They hadn’t been beaten up at home for 4 years and we beat them up there in the round robin. Naas were going in to score the winning try in the corner, and the referee pulled them from forward pass. It was like going from heaven to hell, then back to heaven”

What would you say is the funniest thing you ever saw at the club?

“I wouldn’t say the funniest moment ever, but I was coaching here a long time ago, and Mick Cullinane, RIP lord have mercy on him, great character, fantastic fella. He played 2nd row, was Captain but he used to end up in the back line quite a lot and I kept giving out to him for doing it. One night at training we had a little moment where he charged across the fields, snorting and I thought he was going to kill me. I actually said to myself I had 2 choices: I can stand here & die or run away never come back to the place again. And luckily he stopped about a foot from my face and that was a moment I’ll never forget”

What would you say makes Midleton RFC different from other clubs?

“Rugby in Midleton is like a GAA club in every other town. Really it’s not a rugby club, it’s a rugby community, and that’s evident every time you go into the dressing room after a game that we’ve won, and they sing the song with everyone, it’s just incredible”

What does Midleton RFC mean to you?

“Everything”

Humans of Towns Park #2

Positions played: Front Row

What kept you coming back to the club over the years?

“The people, the sport, the comradery, it’s just a great club”

Who would you say was the biggest character in the dressing room?

“Tosh Lynch, Tommy Lynch. He was just mad, on & off the field”

What’s changed most since you first joined?

“The rules of the game, they’re changing every year. It’s hard to keep pace with it”

What is the best club moment that you can remember?

“Going up from the junior ranks to senior, after the 97/98 season”

What would you say is your hope for the future of the club?

“That we’ll preserve our senior status, and hopefully kick on, but we need players. You need a mix of home grown players and some talented imported players. But we need to grow our own home players first, look around, most of these lads are from Midleton. It’s a good community club”

What would you say keeps you involved after all these years?

“I’ve made some great friends here, made some friends for life. We will be friends for life, either I’ll be under their coffin or they’ll be under mine”

Final question, what does Midleton RFC mean to you?

“If I was to describe it in a couple of words to me: Friendship, Community, Comradery. I mean look around, it’s fantastic”
