How did you get involved?
“We enjoyed watching rugby on TV & decided to play ourselves. Rossa Williams’ father, John, set us up originally. It was a few local neighbours at the start & then we got organised & had the likes of Tom�Mul, Eddie Farrell then Kevin Hennessy, Pat Hartnett & King Power from the GAA. Lot of intercounty players”
Favourite memory from your time here?
“The best win for me was in the Munster Junior Cup, beating Thomond to qualify for the round robin. There was up to 3,000 people in Towns Park that day, 3 or 4 deep all around. The conditions were shocking, I think we won something like 6-0. That was the start to us progressing as a senior club, which we qualified for the following year”
Any standout players from that time?
“Niall Murphy, Don Lynch, Andrew McCarthy, Graham Eady, Keith Birdthistle, Gary Johnston, Eddie Farrell, Paul Daly.. all great players”
Any story you want to tell?
“A funny incident happened during a game in the cricket field playing into a gale force wind. Andy Lynch was the captain, Andy Bang. We got a penalty inside our own 22 & the referee said, ‘What are you doing?’ so Andy joked ‘We go for goal.’ The ref said ‘ok’ & Andy said ‘oh no I’m only joking’ & the referee said ‘no you have to now’. So he had to place the ball & kick for goal inside our own 22 against the wind. It barely made our 22m line”
Any advice for a new member?
“Come in & embrace the setup, members & players. If you want to play, you can play. If you want to be a supporter, no problem. Or if you want to go further & join the committee, there’s plenty jobs”
Favourite thing about Towns Park?
“Coming here on the AIL day. It’s a big occasion. If you’re in contention for promotion, watching good competitive games, it’s a good place to be & good craic afterwards as well”
What does Midleton RFC mean to you?
“Well, it means a lot, really. Most of my friends come from rugby & it’s a place where you spend a lot of your free time. It’s my life, really.”
