On this World Food Safety Day, June 7th, we want to recognise the professionals across the food sector whose dedication and expertise help ensure the food we rely on every day is safe, high quality and trusted.

With the warmer temperatures across Ireland this week, it’s a good time to think about heat stress and how warmer conditions can affect people during their working day.

While outdoor work is often the first thing that comes to mind during hotter temperatures, many indoor work environments can become just as challenging, particularly areas involving machinery, production lines, physical tasks, limited airflow or heavy PPE.

During warmer weather, temperatures can rise quickly indoors, especially in busy environments where people are constantly moving, lifting, operating equipment or working near heat generating processes.

Heat stress happens when the body struggles to cool itself properly. Even moderate temperatures can lead to fatigue, dehydration, reduced concentration, and slower reaction times all of which can increase workplace risk.

Some common signs to watch for include:
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Excessive sweating
- Fatigue
- Muscle cramps
- Nausea
- Difficulty concentrating

A few simple steps can make a big difference during higher temperatures:
- Encourage regular hydration
- Improve airflow and ventilation where possible
- Allow for additional short breaks during physically demanding work
- Rotate tasks where heat exposure is higher
- Check in regularly with staff
- Encourage staff to report symptoms early

World Health and Safety Day 2026 takes place on Tuesday, the 28th of April. This year’s theme, “Ensuring a healthy psychosocial working environment for all,” focuses on the everyday reality of work, how it’s organised, how people are supported, and how we create environments where individuals feel safe, valued, and able to speak up.

Many organisations already have strong foundations in this area. The challenge is keeping wellbeing visible in day to day work through clear policies, practical supports, and open communication.

Whether building on existing supports or just getting started, World Health and Safety Day is a great opportunity to take simple practical steps to improve workplace psychosocial safety:
• Highlight trained supports such as Mental Health First Aiders or explore training staff to take on this role
• Remind staff of available supports like an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), ensuring access details are clear and visible
• Equip people managers with training to recognise the early signs of stress within their teams
• Consider establishing a wellbeing group and appointing wellbeing champions to keep the conversation active
• Ensure clear and accessible channels are in place for staff to raise concerns, including options to do so confidentially
• Foster a culture where staff feel safe to speak up and be heard

For a neurodivergent worker, a normal day at work can feel very different from everyone else’s. What seems like background noise, bright lights, busy conversations, or sudden changes can feel exhausting and overwhelming. Simple interactions may take extra energy, especially when trying to read people, manage stress, or keep up with unspoken expectations. While others may not notice these challenges, the effort can be constant and invisible.

While these challenges often go unnoticed, the effort behind them is constant and invisible.

On World Autism Awareness Day, it’s a reminder that awareness isn’t just about understanding, it’s about creating workplaces where differences are recognised, respected, and supported every day. At the same time, neurodivergent individuals bring incredible strengths: honesty, deep focus, creativity, and unique ways of thinking that add real value to any team.

With awareness, patience, and the right support, workplaces can become environments where people feel accepted, confident, and able to truly thrive.

Endometriosis affects approximately 1 in 10 women of reproductive age. Yet in many workplaces, it remains invisible.
Chronic pain, Fatigue, Nausea, Brain fog, Unpredictable symptom flares. And often: silence. Endometriosis is not “just bad periods.” It’s a long-term inflammatory condition that can significantly impact physical and mental wellbeing.

When workplaces ignore this reality, the impact shows up elsewhere:
• Absenteeism
• Presenteeism
• Burnout
• Talent loss

Support doesn’t require complex programs. It starts with awareness. Practical steps include:
• Manager education to reduce stigma
