A huge thank you to Sean from for an incredibly informative and engaging evening with our club tonight. And thanks to for giving us use of their space to hold the session.
Sean covered a wide range of topics that are vital for every runner, regardless of experience level. One of the key takeaways was the importance of understanding pace and knowing when to run easy versus when to run hard. Easy runs help build aerobic fitness, aid recovery, and reduce injury risk, while faster sessions develop speed, strength, and race-specific fitness. Striking the right balance between the two is essential for long-term progress.
Nutrition was another major focus of the evening. Sean highlighted how proper nutrition supports training, recovery, and overall performance. We learned about the importance of fuelling before runs to ensure adequate energy levels, as well as taking on fuel during longer efforts to maintain performance and avoid hitting the wall. Recovery nutrition was also discussed, helping the body repair and adapt after training.
We also explored the science behind VO₂ max and why it is such an important indicator of endurance performance. Understanding your VO₂ max can provide valuable insights into your aerobic capacity, training zones, and overall fitness, allowing for more personalised and effective training plans.
The session gave us plenty of food for thought and highlighted how small changes can make a big difference to our running journey. We can’t wait to book in for testing and learn even more about our individual fitness profiles.
Thanks again, Sean, for sharing your expertise and helping us all become smarter, stronger runners!
