Corkbeg AFC Community focused football club based in Whitegate, Co. Cork. Catering for players from Age 5 upwards. Celebrated 50 years in Football in 2018.

Corkbeg AFC was founded in 1968. We are a community focused football club based in Whitegate, Co. Our Home ground is situated in Corkbeg Sports & Social Club in Whitegate. The club caters for players at Schoolboy, Schoolgirls and Adult age groups, from the age of 5 years upwards. The Club seeks to provide soccer games and training for all who wish to participate in a safe and enjoyable environment

. The club is affiliated to the FAI, CSL, CWSSL, Cork AUL, Cork Youths League and MFA. The Club has 13 competitive teams at present and runs an underage academy every Sunday morning for six to ten year olds. Our competitive teams are :

Adult : Junior (Cork AUL) & U-19 (CYL)

Schoolboy : U12, U12'A', U13, U-13'A,' U-14, U-14'A', U-15, U-16 and U-16'A' (CSL)

Schoolgirls: U-16 and U-14 (CWSSL)

Academy (non Competitive): Boys: U11. U10, U9, U8, U7, U6 (CSL) Girls: U-10 & U-11 (CWSSL)

It’s not often that you ask a group of lads for maximum effort for a full game and they give you it and more. On Thursday night, against a very good Macroom team , the lads gave a top drawer performance to advance in the cup.

The opening stages were quiet even as Macroom were both strong and quick in their play. But the lads grew into the game and both teams had several chances in the first 20 minutes. Both Issac Logue and Tomas Day on the wings were central to most our attacks, but the first goal came via a different route. Good work off the ball from Jack Dineen and Adam Coakley to win the ball back saw a bit of space open up and Adam slipped the ball to Jack who got a well deserved goal.

We held our composure at 1-0 till half time and were glad of Justin O’Leary in goals making decisive saves and clearances to keep Macroom scoreless . But this wasn’t a ‘park the bus and backs to the wall performance’ as the lads went out in the second half looking for a second goal .

And it was no surprise that the engine of the team on the night combined for goal number two. Dave O’Riordan found Issac with a pin point pass and Isaac struck powerfully to the net. Credit to Macroom, they competed from start to finish and they scored from a well struck penalty which Justin was inches from saving .

We had further chances , but at times were in need of some serious tracking back by lads to cover for team mates and again, were glad of Justin’s positioning and alertness on several occasions. With no subs to share the load, some very tired lads gave the 100% we asked for and another 50% on top.

A special shout out to John Mescal who was a colossus in the central of defence. He was unbeatable in the air, competed in every tackle and at one stage stopped a certain goal while on his knees. .

Best of luck to Shane, Pat, Ken and all the Corkbeg U13 crew as they head west this evening to Jake O Donoghue Park in search of the U13Div3 league title.

A win at Innishvilla this evening will see our U13 team crowned league champions and would be a fantastic result after all their hard work this season.

If you happen to be down around the Innishannon or Bandon area this evening, I'm sure the lads would appreciate all support in their quest for silverware. Kick off is at 7pm

Corkbeg bounced back from last weekend’s defeat with a well earned victory at home to Bandon on Monday night.

The first half saw the home team play some great passing moves and show composure on the ball. The opening goal came from Tomas Day gathering a John Mescal pass and cutting in from the right wing before unleashing a powerful left foot shot to the net. The roles were reversed for goal number two with John meeting Tomas’s cross with a powerful fiinish.

While the score line looked comfortable , in truth there was a few times we needed Justin O’Leary in goals to make a save or come off his line to make a clearance. 2-0 at half time.

The second half saw the defenders sort out the occasional hesitation with better communication at the back while in midfield they began to open up Bandon a bit more. The third goal started from a Ronan Larkin long throw to David O’Riordan in midfield , who in turn passed wide to Sam McCarthy on the other wing .Sam drove forward , had a good shot well saved , but Issac Logue came in off his wing to finish it to the net. 3-0.

Issac then turned provider when he got to the end line on the right wing and crossed for Sam to get on the score sheet. The fifth goal was all about the two hard working direct runners on the team . Hunter McCrae tore through the middle and set the only man who could keep up with him, Adam Coakley , for a well taken goal.

This was followed by Issac beating his marker out wide on the right and sending a fantastic cross to the edge of the box for David O’Riordan to smash home to the top corner when others would have blasted it over the bar, such was the power in the shot. The final goal was an excellent left foot strike from ‘the poacher’ Jack Dineen from Tomas’s cross.

The score line is the score line , but the satisfaction after the game was from the passing and level of game management in the second half . In truth, some of the best performances were from the lads who didn’t get on the scoresheet. Thanks to Bandon for making the long trip on a school night and for the sporting game.

A grand bright Monday evening in Corkbeg as we hosted Blarney in a really enjoyable game, a win would all but guarantee promotion!

Corkbeg got off to a solid start, Ethan Keohane was solid in defence and Dave O’Brien was causing all sorts of trouble for the opposition on the right wing. The home team were piling on the pressure throughout the half, eventually the breakthrough came, a well delivered corner couldn’t be cleared by Blarney due to the lads applying pressure, it landed at the feet of Charlie Mescal and he powered it into the bottom corner, this gave Corkbeg the lead going into half time.

Corkbeg started the second half well but conceded against the run of play to a really well taken goal from distance. In fairness the boys have been here before, and they have consistently demonstrated character to get back up off the canvas. Corkbeg got the next, Mikey Whyte got through with a well timed run and slotted the the ball home with great composure.

Not sure if we all got white line fever now. But for an instant the team just switched off and conceded a sloppy late goal, which wasn’t part of the script. A good performance by the team, but felt like one we could have won.

The league table doesn’t lie once it gets to the business end of the season. Everton are in second place and with good reason. On Saturday morning, they were that bit more efficient , that bit more alert and that bit more clinical in terms of finishing than the Corkbeg lads .

After going one nil down , playing against a very strong breeze , the lads tried hard to get some passing and possession going, but it just wasn’t happening for them. Everton doubled their lead with a shot from the edge of the square that we had several chances to block and clear.

But credit to the character of this team , they really gave it everything in the second half. Issac Logue was our main outlet on the wing and his goal at the start of the second half was the life line we needed . Time to gamble and change formation in a game that has a big say in who gets promoted. Soon after , good interplay from David O’Riordan and Isaac Logue set Sam McCarthy free , and , as he has done several times this season, Sam finished clinically to the net.

A hard fought come back, but a score line we couldn’t hold on to and Everton took the lead again soon after. It ended 3-2 but the lads can be very happy with some great performances in the second half , with our Goalie Justin O’Leary doing really well, hard running and tacking from Hunter McCrae and David and two super sliding tackles from James Day in defence.

While the lads were very disappointed at the final whistle , the life lessons in terms of going behind , picking your self up and going again, even if it doesn’t lead to a victory , might prove more important long term that the three league points.

Well done to Everton and no time to feel sorry for ourselves as it’s Bandon at home on Monday night .
