The wind whistles across Shinnecock Hills, carrying with it the roars of the gallery enthralled by the 126th US Open.

It’s a big-time occasion, but the setting feels comfortingly familiar to Listowel native Séan Quinlivan, who first fell in love with the game on the sandy dunes of Ballybunion.

Now, 27 years after he first crossed the Atlantic to chase his golfing dreams, he proudly represents the club as just the fourth head professional in its 135-year history.

Quinlivan has gone from US mini-tours to the Canadian circuit and Florida’s sweltering heat to the rarefied air of the Hamptons in New York without losing even a modicum of his Kerry lilt.

It’s been a long but fruitful journey for the former East of Ireland and Mullingar Scratch Cup winner, and at 51, he can finally say he’s won his Major.

It’s two years since Pádraig was inducted to the World Golf Hall of Fame and the end of the acceptance speech at his Hall of Fame induction was pretty special as he recounted the words Bob Torrance would say to him as he went from the practice area to the first tee.

‘These are the happiest days of our lives.’

Great words to still live by.

Many say the equipment doesn’t matter and it’s all about the players skill.

However here’s an example of a test with two different shafts with the same head. Both 65 gram stiff shafts but one of a higher quality than the other.

The higher quality shaft has a better dispersion pattern, more shots in the fairway and less shots in trouble lead to lower scores.

It’s not always the player and high quality equipment does make a difference. No extra practice was required to get better results.
