The Munster PGA had their first outing at Cork Golf Club yesterday. Cork played great and the course was in fantastic condition for the time of year and the scoring reflected that.

Final positions (top 3 placings).
1st John Dooley 39 points
2nd David Ryan 38 points
Tied 3rd Paul Eivers, Padraig Dooley, John Hickey 35 points

Over the last number of months, I have stuck to a consistent practice plan (which I promote during each golf lesson that I coach). My practice plan is a mix of working on my preshot routine (grip, aim, alignment, and posture), my mental approach to golf (using Zen Golf, breathing, and visualisation), keeping my technique simple (swing path accuracy, swing timing, etc), body movement exercises, and staying flexible and fit. At the same time, I avoid overthinking too much about how to make perfect swings and keep focused on what I am working on.

We all have our strengths, such as good at chipping, putting, driving, iron shots, 90-yard shots, and so on. I always recommend that golfers keep track of how they play and keep measuring their performances so they can identify the areas in which they are performing. To improve how you place takes time and keep working on your game.

Relax keep going and enjoy how you play is one part of golf that I am currently enjoying.

May is a really nice time of the year to get out and get playing, dust off the cobwebs and get hitting. Set your goals for the year, track how you play and enjoy the game.

Right shaft is very important 👍🏻

Right shaft is very important 👍🏻

Here's a photo of combined shots hit with a clients normal shaft and with a Fujikura Ventus Blue TR 6 S. The same head was used in both shafts. Both shafts were the same length, weight and flex so why the big difference between the two?

His original shaft was a counterbalanced shaft, and many times they either are great or terrible, for this golfer it didn't suit. The second thing is the very high quality of the Ventus TR shaft. How does that make a difference? In the high quality shafts there are better materials and quality control.

In the lesser quality shafts with cheaper materials there tends to be more deflection in the shaft, more deflection in the shaft means slight changes in the face angle, loft and strike point on the face at impact. These are lessened with better shafts, which means better accuracy.

If the golfer is optimised with the right head, length, weight, flex and type of shaft they will get their maximum distance no matter what quality of shaft used, it just will happen more often with the better quality shaft.

This golfer was also fully optimised with their driver, they had the right head but wrong shaft. With the right shaft they became optimised which is why we see a little more distance. This is also not saying that the shaft is the most important part of the club. It's not. The wrong head with the right shaft is the wrong club and the wrong shaft with the right head is the wrong club. It's best to get both right.
