When your vet scans your mare to check if she is in season, they are assessing her uterine health and looking for a "dominant follicle" on her ovaries that indicates ovulation is approaching.

Here are the key questions to ask, categorized by what you need to know:

"What size is the largest follicle?"

"Does the follicle look like it’s ready to ovulate?"

"How much uterine edema is present?"

"Is there any abnormal fluid in the uterus?"

2. Timing the Breeding

"When do you think she will ovulate?"

"When is the best time to breed/inseminate her?"

"Do I need to bring her back for a follow-up scan?"

3. Reproductive Health and History

"Does her cervix look relaxed/open?"

"Based on this scan, is she a good candidate for breeding right now?"

"Do we need a uterine swab/culture?"

Summary of What to Track:

Make sure you record the results/this will be useful when talking to stallion owners:

Follicle size (e.g., 35mm, 40mm).
Uterine edema score
Shape of the follicle
Does she need to be rescanned and when
Date of planned breeding
