Looking good doesn’t come naturally, you know! 😎

There’s a fair bit of work goes into keeping our boats looking their best and, like the rest of us, they need a little help from the experts now and again!

So, a big thank you to Mickey ‘The Magician’ Mac and Séamus ‘The Swiss Army Knife’ Graham for all the work they put into keeping our boats shipshape!

Mickey, as his middle name suggests, is magic. We’re tempted to call him Magic Mike but that has its own connotations! 🙈🫢! 🏁

Séamus, lends a hand to just about everything at LHRC. If there’s a job to be done, chances are he’s already doing it, thinking about doing it, or has somehow managed to have done it without us even knowing. 🏁

And aren’t we blessed with this weather? Blue skies in October! ☀️

Wishing everyone a lovely Sunday, a bit of October sunshine, maybe a roast in the oven, good health, and great company. Sure, what more could you ask for?

Oh, finally, bon voyage to our American friend Andrew, who’s heading back across the Atlantic! It was a pleasure having you rowing with us, Andrew. As they say in France, à bientôt!

🧠 MEET THE QUIZMASTER’S APPRENTICE!

We’ve often wondered how Martin comes up with all the questions for the table quiz circuit. This year, we thought we’d get y’all some help with the warm-up.

Meet the Quizmaster’s Apprentice. Identity is unknown. Lives in the library. He’s so clever, he found one that serves creamy pints! 🤷🏻‍♀️ He’ll be popping up with a question now and then to get us practising before the big night.

First question: How many hearts does an octopus have? 🐙

Ah LOOOOOK! 🥹

Our boys love their toys! This thing has petrol, power and an engine. Listen for the happy music that comes on in their brain! ✨

Living beside the Atlantic is wonderful, but all that salty sea, salty air, and salty spray can take its toll on our boats!

Good maintenance is essential, and washing down our boats after every outing helps keep them in good condition for years to come.

Then there’s the slipway. Keeping it clean and safe is hugely important, not just for our members embarking and disembarking, but for everyone in the community who uses it to access the shore.

We made our case to Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board (LCETB), and they very kindly listened!

Thanks to their generous support, we now have a power washer to help us look after our equipment and our little corner of the Loop.

A huge thank you to LCETB for making this purchase possible via their Community Education programme. It’s a practical investment that will make a real difference to our club.

Apparently, it’s the bee’s knees and spider’s ankles of a yoke and judging by the enthusiasm for the new arrival, we won’t be short of volunteers to operate it! 😂

We went international today!

We had a very special crew member on board, all the way from the States. Andrew McDowell, officially our furthest-flung member, joined us for his maiden voyage with Loop Head Rowing Club.

When Andrew first applied for membership and we spotted the American address, we’ll admit we were a little suspicious. Had our little rowing club in West Clare finally become the target of a very niche intercontinental scam?

But no. Andrew is the real deal. A great lover of Clare, he had been following what we do from across the Atlantic and decided he wanted to be part of it. He’s over in Ireland for a month, so today we finally got to swap the long-distance membership for an actual seat in the boat.

Andrew, you may be our furthest member from Clare, but today you were right at home with the crew. We hope you enjoyed your maiden voyage, and that it’s the first of a few while you’re here!

Two rows this evening. September air getting colder, but blue is still everywhere.

Blue above us. Blue around us. The kind you want to soak up and store away, like a squirrel with its hazelnuts. An evening to take out again when winter feels long.

We’ll keep rowing when we can, and when our skippers say it’s safe. Thank you, Séamus, Biddy, Marcus, and Frank. The weather, of course, will have its say.

That’s part of the beauty of it. You can turn up at a gym knowing the doors will be open. With rowing, you watch the forecast. You wait for the message. Sometimes it’s a yes, and everything feels sweeter for the waiting.

Sometimes it’s a no, and your heart drops right down to your wellies. That little pang tells you how much joy you knew was waiting out there.

Rowing isn’t on demand. There’s no takeaway, no playback. Just the anticipation, the row, and the lovely feeling that stays with you afterwards.

For some of us of a certain age, the following phrase jumps to the front of our brain: “ah, that’s Bass”. WYKYK!

Meán Fómhair, the middle of autumn, is nearly gone. Soon it’ll be Deireadh Fómhair. We’ll rest when we need to, gather up evenings like this one, and row whenever the sea lets us.
