The new CDJL season is set to kick off this weekend and while we'll all fall into the routine of training sessions, matches, odds & evens, Academy selections and all the other familiar aspects of a season, there is already a hugely significant change to things for the 2026-27 Season ahead, and that is the notable absence of communications signed off by John Collins.
An essential part of the CDJL Committee for as far back as any of us remember, maybe the biggest compliment we can pay is to say that if you played any role in juvenile football since the founding of the CDJL, you probably have a story about John going out of his way to help you and your Club - and another story of a clash with him!! 🤣🤣
John's non-partisan stance meant his focus was always, unapologetically, on one thing - serving the young players in the region as best he could.
Club colours never coloured John's stance or handling of anything - only what was right for the League, the Club, the team, and always the player in question.
And he was deservedly honoured recently by the CDJL Committee for his outstanding service to local juvenile football.
Instrumental in the juvenile league itself, John was also a key figure in the establishment of the Academy setup and years of participation and success at Kennedy Cups, Gaynor Cups, Galway Cups and National Inter-leagues, the founding of what is now CK United and the promotion of Girl's underage soccer across the region.
We wish John well in his retirement and he is always welcome to come watch a match at The Meadows.
His brother-in-arms, Bob Howson, was also deservedly acknowledged for his many years of service to underage football across the County and beyond, and has returned to his role as League Secretary having held the Chairperson's position in recent years.
Another massive thanks for all you have done Bob - and best of luck in your new role for the season ahead.
