Springfield 3-2 Banteer 🟢⚪️
Springfield left it late to secure all three points in a thrilling five-goal encounter against Banteer at St Colman’s Park last night, scoring twice in the dying minutes to complete a remarkable comeback.
Banteer went into the break with a 1-0 lead after a first half in which both sides created several good opportunities but struggled to find the finishing touch.
The second half continued in much the same fashion, with both teams battling hard in an entertaining, end-to-end contest. Springfield eventually found their breakthrough on 57 minutes when a superb cross from Patrick Fingleton picked out Kyle Cummins at the front post, allowing him to finish and bring the game level.
With both sides pushing for a winner, the game remained finely balanced heading into the closing stages. The drama was only getting started, however, as Springfield goalkeeper Cormac Brennan produced a superb last-gasp save to turn a dangerous effort around the post for a corner. From the resulting set piece, Banteer appeared to have snatched a late winner.
To their credit, Springers refused to give up and continued to pile pressure on the Banteer defence. Their persistence paid off when they were awarded a penalty, with Caylum Gooney stepping up to calmly dispatch the spot kick and restore parity.
There was still time for one final twist. A beautifully weighted through ball over the top from Kyle Cummins sent Aaron Cahill racing into the Banteer box, where he made no mistake in firing home the winner and sparking mass celebrations among the Springfield players and bench.
It was a fantastic finish to a highly entertaining game, with the Springers showing tremendous character and determination to fight until the very end.
That makes it three wins on the bounce for Springfield, who will look to keep the momentum going next weekend when they face another tough test against Knocknaheeny. 🟢⚪️
