The factors that impact how (and how fast) you build muscle:
1) genetics - these influence your body type, metabolism, type of muscle fibres, and recovery time.
2) age - the younger you are the easier it is to gain muscle - mostly because under 40s have more rapid recovery and a better ability to synthesise protein to help with repair.
3) training experience - if you’re new to weight training (first year or so), your body will adapt faster. Once you’ve been training consistently for years it can take 6 months to notice gains that you may have noticed in 3 months at the beginning of your journey.
4) training quality - well executed reps with carefully chosen exercises and progressive overload will always beat randomised workouts with no consistent approach.
5) nutrition - well chosen and planned meals featuring protein and carbs, with the correct balance of calories in and out to reach your goals, will assist in growing muscle.
6) recovery and sleep - muscle growth happens after a workout not during - aided by nutrition - and poor sleep can reduce workout effectiveness and reduce your ability to recover.
The amazing thing is I can help with 5 of these - I can’t make you sleep 😂
