Handicapped SIM Pairs Competition

YCBA are running a handicapped SIM Pairs competition on Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th June.

Nine Yorkshire bridge clubs are participating – Doncaster, Halifax, Huddersfield, Hull, Olicana, Sheffield. Wakefield, Wetherby and York. Please check out arrangements on your local bridge club website.

All players will play the same boards and YCBA will produce a county-wide handicapped ranking. The pairs with the highest handicapped ranking will share a prize fund of £200, to be donated to a charity of their choice.

Visitors are welcome to play at any of the above participating bridge clubs. We encourage ALL players, whatever your standard of play, to participate in this event.

Cafe Bridge in Wetherby

Following our successful sold-out event in August 2025, YCBA are again running a charity café bridge charity event in Wetherby on Wednesday 19th August, 11.15am to 4.15pm.

The cost of the event is £25 per person, which includes lunch and £5 to be donated to Martin House Children’s Hospice in Boston Spa.

Café bridge is relaxed duplicate pairs set up in multiple cafes, pubs or restaurants. It is suitable for all standards of play.

Guided by a map and movement card, pairs have a short walk to the next play venue after each round. Scoring is by smartphone, at one per table, using the free BriAn Bridge app (For more info, see website at https://www.brianbridge.net/cafe/

We are also inviting and welcome members of non-affiliated bridge clubs to participate. All bridge players are welcome.

Poker players bluff. Bridge players psyche. 🎭

Pronunciation: /saɪk/ (verb)

Usage: “He didn’t actually have Spades. He psyched.”

In a game built on accuracy and partnership trust, the Psyche introduces pure disruption.

It is a deliberate and legal misrepresentation of your hand, meant to pressure opponents into giving up a winning position. You hold very little, yet you bid as if you hold everything.

It is a risky move. You might mislead your own partner just as easily as your opponents. But in certain moments, unpredictability becomes your strongest weapon.

Sometimes, creating confusion is the only path to victory.

You don’t lose at bridge because you don’t know enough…

Before every bid, there’s a moment—a tiny window—where great players separate themselves from the rest.

This is your checklist.

✔️ Is your hand balanced or unbalanced?
✔️ Who’s vulnerable?
✔️ What did partner actually say with their last bid?
✔️ Do you have a stopper… or are you hoping?
✔️ Are you counting losers—or just chasing points?
✔️ What seat are you in? (It matters more than you think.)
✔️ Are you describing shape… or strength?
✔️ Is there a smarter, more defensive option?
✔️ Is the risk worth the reward?
