Delayed race report for Super One Series at Shenington from the bank holiday weekend.
After the battering the chassis and I got from the Whilton Mill S1 round, a lot of welding of the kart chassis by Dad when he got back into the UK. We headed off to an event I look forward to...Shenington Kart Racing Club - SKRC.
I was back in the JWR awning and feeling like it was somewhere I now belonged. I worked hard Friday practice, focusing heavily on reducing lap times with my Instructor Joe Weaver. After a slippy start on a very green track it was an anxious Dad who had to place his trust in the team and Paul Weaver who said the track will come to us...do nothing on setup! JWR were absolutely correct and the kart did come to me over the course of the morning and the lap times improved not just each session, but in 80% of the cases...each lap.
In the tow we were with the back of the pack by the end of the day!
Saturday was wet to start with and the track dried rapidly in Qualification turning brand new full wets into intermediate rain tyres. Then it was raining on and off all day. I'd not driven the Junior in the wet in anger before. Just played around with it on slicks. But I listened to Joe and applied his teachings and improved my lap times again throughout the day. Positions were as follows:
QN = 27 of 28
H1 = 27 > 25 (+2 places)
H2 = 27 > 25 (+2 places)
FL = 27 > 25 (+2 places)
For the final race, the position doesn’t reflect the actual performance I put in. Dad had learned throughout the day also and gave me a good setup for a track that he thought would dry mid race. I struggled on for the first half of the race under pressure from behind then the kart came to me. I checked out from the pack behind and began catching the pack ahead by 0.5s a lap and only 9/10ths off the fastest lap, 20th fastest out of 28...back of the mid-pack!
With my mate and now team mate Charlie Gregg clinching the Intermax Title that day and there was buzz in the awning going into Saturday night.
Sunday was dry all day and now I had to learn the dry lines again with support from Joe and our mechanic neighbor Neil who gave me some tips for the third sector. Results for Sunday as follows:
QY = 25 of 28 (1.1s off the pace of the fastest lap)
H1 = 25 > 23 (0.85s off the pace of the fastest lap - but had a huge wreck that bent the steering column)
H2 = 25 > 24 (0.5s off the fastest lap but found the chassis was bent from the earlier wreck)
FL = 28 > 19
In the final I was 0.38s off the fastest lap. But I was lifting at the end of the straights as I never heard the engine make the noises it was making (14k RPM buzz). The RPM gauge went off the scale and I was worried the engine was in trouble. Turns out Dad hadn't updated the RPM scale and max RPM light from the inter (13.6k RPM). Also I'm on a very soft battered 2020 chassis, end of life engines and missing a few choice parts that would help bring that lap time down further. The entire fields 'fastest laps' spread was 0.6s so I was certainly on the pace with more to come.
Huge thank you to the whole Joe Weaver Racing Team...
Joe, Paul, Claire and Neil who all play a part in extracting so much pace out of me. I can't wait to do a full season with them in 2027.
Run out of images so robbed some of the teams images we shared earlier in the week. Sorry JWR.
