Warrington Rowing Club

Warrington Rowing Club Warrington Rowing Club was opened in 1986 and since then has grown year upon year.

As a club, we have seen numerous successes over the years and continue to achieve at local and national levels. We cater for all abilities from complete novice to elite - the club runs the popular 'Learn to Row' course at various points throughout the year. The club is ran entirely by volunteers and welcome anybody that would like to come down and get involved!

Today marks the end of an era at Warrington Rowing Club, as John McQuillian finishes his time as a coach with the club.

John’s journey at WRC actually began as a parent of a junior rower. From there, he became an Adult Learn to Row coach before moving into junior coaching, where he went on to coach young athletes to an exceptionally high standard.

Over the years, some of those rowers have gone on to compete internationally for Great Britain, while others have continued their rowing journeys at university - including one who is now rowing on a scholarship in Texas!

John has devoted countless hours to coaching, supporting and encouraging athletes, travelling the length and breadth of the country to competitions, towing boats, helping with trailers and equipment, and sharing his considerable knowledge of rowing and boat set-up.

He has always been willing to give his time to athletes who needed something a little different. One great example is Eimear, our blind rower who learned to row under other coaches a few years ago. When Eimear joined John's squad, he dedicated additional time and attention to help her develop her skills and confidence to row and compete at high levels, and has played an important part in helping her progress to the level she is rowing at today, ready to join our senior squad. We know how much that has meant to her and her family.

And there have certainly been some memorable adventures along the way! From getting accidentally locked in the club when the shutters broke, to being stranded on a broken down launch, John has experienced more than his fair share of the joys of rowing club life!

For the many young people and families he has supported over the years, his dedication has made a lasting difference.

So, as he hangs up his coaching hat today, we say thank you John, for the time, knowledge and commitment you have given to Warrington Rowing Club and to the athletes you’ve coached.

HUGE congrats to our 3 x J16’s (Noah, Flo & Laurence - pictured here at Hollingworth Regatta today!) who all smashed their GCSEs and are off to study at John Deanes and Warrington UTC. πŸ’ͺ

As always the consistency of rowing has supported them throughout the stressful times and given them the resilience to juggle it all.

We’re so proud of them all and delighted for them. ⭐️ πŸ‘ πŸ™Œ

Another great Latchford Duck Race event hosted at our club today. πŸ¦†

A slow stream and contrary winds led to a shortened course, but lots of fun anyway and those ducks - large and small - did their very best to make progress from that start line!

Well done to the huge amount of organising from our local community group. And also massive thanks to the volunteers from our club who gave up their afternoon to put out the finish lines, and recover the 100s of ducks from the most far flung banks of our river! Thank you Den, Richard, Kev, Emily, Barry, Olly and Jen! πŸ™Œ

Same again next year! πŸ¦† πŸ’™πŸ’›

With six doubles, three quads, a four and an eight competing on Saturday and two doubles on Sunday, it’ll be an energetic weekend for sure!

But we also know there’ll be a big social element thrown in too!

Race well and have fun all! πŸ’ͺ 🚣 πŸ₯³πŸ’™πŸ’›
