โHistory was made at Richmond Hill Road as Walsall Unity and Mermaids Cricket Club faced off in the inaugural match at the newly minted ground, both teams delivering an exciting match โก
โOn a challenging, grass-topped wicket that offered plenty for the bowlers, runs were hard-earned from the opening ball. Unity took to the crease first and found themselves under immediate pressure from a disciplined Mermaids attack, losing early wickets, However, skipper Asad Agha anchored the innings with a gritty and resolute performance.โณ
Aghaโs unbeaten 60* provided the backbone of the innings, steering Unity to a competitive total of 148-6 in their allotted 18 overs. Stanley was the standout performer with the ball for Mermaids, stifling the scoring and finishing with figures of 2-16.๐
โKnowing they needed an extraordinary effort in the field to defend the target, Unityโs young bowling lineup stepped up to the mark in spectacular fashion. Leading the charge was 17-year-old Shafay Hussain, who delivered a superb spell of seam bowling on his T20 debut, dismantling the opposition lineup to finish with exceptional figures of 3-11๐ Hussain was backed up by a tight, economical spell from Asif (1-16).
โDespite a valiant effort from Mermaids Mobin (32), the pressure ultimately proved too much, entering the final over needing a steep 24 runs for victory, Mermaids fell 18 runs short of the target as Unity closed out a memorable win.๐ช
