🥊 Davies Delights And Cooper Gets Another Win
Liam Davies solidified his world title ambitions as he destroyed Jason Cunningham inside a round at the International Centre in Telford writes Jack Heather.
The British and European super bantamweight champion emphatically dispatched the vastly more experienced Cunningham, adding the WBO International title to his already stacked collection.
Davies walked out to a thunderous reception in his hometown and was dominant from the outset, delivering on his pre-fight promise of a career-best performance.
The Telford native landed a straight right-hand mid-way through the opening round that buckled the knees of his domestic foe, forcing referee Victor Loughlin to administer a standing eight count.
Although Cunningham looked to have momentarily recovered, a leaping lead left hook signalled the beginning of the end for the 40-fight veteran.
Backed up against the ropes with Davies raining down countless unanswered combinations, Loughlin was left with little choice but to intervene.
Much to the delight of his adoring fans, Davies was crowned victorious with less than 30 seconds remaining in the very first round.
In true testament to his character, Davies embraced Cunningham in the aftermath despite a hostile build-up where both men traded verbal blows.
Before Davies emerged as a local superstar, Telford had not hosted a professional boxing event for 13 years.
Now headlining at the arena for a third consecutive time, the BCB promotions-managed fighter has single-handedly turned his hometown into a boxing hotbed.
Davies’ triumph headlined TNT’s first boxing event since their rebrand from BT Sport.
The 27-year-old from Donnington reiterated his intentions for world honours in his post-fight interview and named world champion Marlon Tapales and Dennis McCann as potential next opponents.
Davies has now picked up six titles in 14 professional bouts, an outstanding achievement that the Tristian Davies and Errol Johnson trained fighter will be keen to add to.
OWEN COOPER-ROBIN ZAMORA
Owen Cooper extended his unbeaten record to 9-0 as outpointed experienced Nicaraguan Robin Zamora at the International Centre in Telford writes Jack Heather.
The Worcester native ran out the 78-74 winner on referee Chris Dean’s scorecard but failed to put a dent in the uber-tough Zamora.
The 22-year-old has built quite the following in his hometown and the trip to Telford has become a regular occurrence for the welterweight contender’s fanbase.
The former midlands area champion has now made four consecutive appearances at the venue as he continues to step up the level of his opposition.
The eight-round welterweight contest kicked off TNT’s live broadcast on the undercard of Liam Davies’ first-round demolition of Jason Cunningham.
Cooper landed the better shots throughout the contest but was also caught regularly by 42-fight veteran Zamora, an experience that will serve him well as he continues his development.
The BCB promotions managed fighter noted his desire for more domestic titles in the next 12 months.
